Archbishop Mitty Claims National Title

Itís not how you start, but how you finish.

For that reason, San Jose (Calif.) Archbishop Mitty gets the call as the No. 1 team in the final RivalsHigh Top 100 baseball rankings.

The school finished 31-3 on the year, but won its final eight games, including a 12-0 mercy-rule victory over San Jose (Calif.) Bellarmine in their Central Coast Section final. The victory avenged an earlier 3-2 defeat.

Mitty proved solid in all phases of the game.

Preston Caldera led the team in hitting with a .433 average, but there were plenty of big bats on the team. James Roberts hit .411 with a team-high 39 hits; Brett Fuller added 38 hits while leading the team in doubles (14) and home runs (8).

Johnny Melero led the team on the mound, going 9-0 with a 1.31 ERA. He also had five saves. Alex Balog went 8-2 with a 1.01 ERA.

Mitty edged out two teams with winning pedigree. No. 2 Sumrall (Miss.) High had been ranked No. 1 in the nation earlier this season and No. 3 Las Vegas (Nev) Bishop Gorman was the 2009 National Champion.

Mitty wasnít the only team to benefit from a strong finish.

Plain City (Ohio) Jonathan Alder knocked off Cuyahoga Falls (Ohio) Walsh Jesuit in the state final to complete a 34-0 season and jump into the rankings for the first time at No. 20. Alder was one of 32 teams that were new to the poll.

Alder and Walsh were two of five teams from Ohio that made the final poll Ė and gave Ohio the fifth-most teams. Texas led the way with 14, followed by California (12), Florida (11) and Georgia (6).
