Notes: Also played basketball as a Utah prep. Served a religious mission in Oregon (2004-06). Played at Snow College (Utah) in '07, totaling 123 tackles, three pass breakups and four interceptions with one tackle for loss in 11 games. Turned down major Division I scholarship offers to walk on at Brigham Young, where he played all 13 games in '08 despite breaking a bone in his right hand in early September. On the season, started three games and tallied 26-1-1 with one forced fumble. Started all 13 games at strong safety in '09, tallying 85-3-4 with 3½ tackles for loss, one sack and two forced fumbles. Sat out '10 spring practice as he recovered from ankle and shoulder injuries. Led the Cougars in tackles in '10, posting 110-8-5 with 7½ tackles for loss, one sack and three forced fumbles in 13 starts at the "Kat" (SS) position. Team captain.

Character player - highly respected by teammates and coaches. Dedicated to his craft. Has special-teams experience. Has long-snapping experience.
Negatives: Overaged. Tight-hipped. Pedals tall. Shows some rigidity when asked to change direction or break down in space. Limited range. Is not sudden or explosive and does not pop out of breaks. Lacks top-end speed. Is not a heavy hitter and too often goes low and does not wrap.
Summary: Mature, productive, Johnny on the spot who always might be a step late arriving in the NFL game. Has the makeup of a fourth safety and core special-teams player.
