No one expected much from Florida International this season. But FIU finished as Sun Blet co-champ and is going to the first bowl in program history. That's why the Panthers' Mario Cristobal leads Rivals.com's All-Sun Belt team.[details]
Notes: Attended high school in North Carolina prior to spending his senior year in Miami. As a true freshman in 2007, played in all 13 games, catching 19 passes for 246 yards (12.9-yard average) and one touchdown. Played in all 13 games in '08, making three starts, and tallied 25-257-2 (10.3). Played in all 12 games in '09, starting the final 10 at the "X" receiver, and pulled in 38-501-4 (13.2) with two kickoff returns for 50 yards (25.0). Was the Owls' Offensive MVP in '10 when he started all 12 games and caught 64-988-8 (15.4). Wore jersey No. 80 prior to junior season.
Positives: Well-built with very good size and long arms. Shows some straight-line competitive speed when he breaks into the clear. Improved as a route runner as a senior and sells double moves. Catches the ball over his shoulder. Good boundary awareness. Enough agility to sidestep the first tackler. Good character. Cares about football.
Negatives: Small hands. Tight hips - struggles to sink his weight and is not smooth in and out of breaks. Wastes movement off the line and is not sudden or explosive. Does not separate consistently, and too many catches are contested. Lacks toughness to work inside. Inconsistent blocker - loses leverage and struggles to sustain.
Summary: Long-limbed, straight-linish outside-the-numbers receiver lacking exceptional traits. Production was inflated against mid-major competition, does not play to his size, and the game does not come naturally to him.
