June 9, 2009

1. Washington Nationals
The Pick: Steven Strasburg, P, San Diego State
The buzz: Really? 103-mph fastball. You may have already heard of this guy. If not you certainly will as he is also in line to set new records for signing bonuses. The only real question is when will the Nationals call him up. 13-1 with 195 strikeouts this season.
2. Seattle Mariners
The Pick: Dustin Ackley, OF, UNC
The buzz: A three time All American at UNC has played mostly 1B because of his injury during his college career. Ackley can run and hit and is also one of the best pure hitters in the 2009 draft.
3. San Diego Padres
The Pick: Donavan Tate, OF, Cartersville HS, Ga.
The buzz: The Padres make the first risky pick of the draft going with the uber-athlete out of Georgia. It is a little bit of a reach for this management team as well. Tate is one of the best athletes in the draft but his signability could be an issue.
4. Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pick: Tony Sanchez, C, Boston College
The buzz: An interesting pick for the Pirates. He is a MLB-ready defensively, but his bat is a question mark. The Pirates could have done better, but it is the Pirates, so they probably could have done worse.
5. Baltimore Orioles
The Pick: Matt Hobgood, Norco HS, Calif
The buzz: Hobgood has his stock jump on draft day. His signability is great and that had to play into the decision. He is an athletic player and a very big upside. He is an aggressive strike-throwing guy.
6. San Francisco Giants
The Pick: Zack Wheeler, RHP, East Paulding HS, Dallas, Ga.
The buzz: A great pick for the Giants. He projects very well and allows the Giants to trade Matt Cain for a few bats. Wheeler has no signability issues. He has a plus fastball and a plus breaking ball.
7. Atlanta Braves
The Pick: Mike Minor, LHP, Vanderbilt
The buzz: Minor has what it takes to be a "crafty veteran" at an early age. Minor flat knows how to pitch and uses an effective change to set-up hitters and keep them off balance. His upside is fairly low but he is close to MLB-ready right now.
8. Cincinnati Reds
The Pick: Mike Leake, RHP, Arizona State
The buzz: Leake had numbers only bettered by Strasburg. At 5-11 people have their doubts but his numbers stand for themselves. He should be quick to the MLB level as well.
9. Detroit Tigers
The Pick: Jacob Turner, RHP, Westminster Christian Academy, St. Louis
The buzz: A plus fastball is his strike out pitch but he also has a good curve. A hard throwing right handed player has minor signability issues (Scott Boras) but could sign with Detroit to stay in the Midwest.
10. Washington Nationals - For Aaron Crow
The Pick: Drew Storen, RHP, Stanford
The buzz: The Nats used their second pick to get a guy they a) knew they could sign and b) get to the majors quickly. The Nats bullpen has been bad all season so this is a guy who could get to the bigs quickly.
11. Colorado Rockies
The Pick: Tyler Matzek, LHP, Capistrano Valley HS, Mission Viejo, Calif.
The buzz: A great pick for the Rockies. A young left handed pitcher with some signability issues (asked for a huge bonus). Matzek pitched in one of the most difficult state playoffs in the country. A great kid with a solid head on his shoulder.
12. Kansas City Royals
The Pick: Aaron Crow, RHP, Ft. Worth Cats/Missouri
The buzz: Crow falls to the Royals who now have to deal with the headache of signing him. A player with unlimited talent also has a lot of leverage. For the young Royals this would be another great arm to put into the rotation in 2010.
13. Oakland Athletics
The Pick: Grant Green, SS, USC
The buzz: One of the top athletes in the draft. Green is a tall SS who could end up moving to 3B. He has a good bat and has played on the international level. He should be signed, but Boras is always interesting.
14. Texas Rangers
The Pick: Matt Purke, LHP, Klein HS, Texas
The buzz: The RivalsHigh.com No. 1 high school player in the class stays home with the pick by Texas. A very projectable left handed pitcher who will not be afraid to challenge hitters in a launching bad hitter's park.
15. Cleveland Indians
The Pick: Alex White, RHP, North Carolina
The buzz: White falling to the Indians is great for the Tribe. White could be called up this season and come out of the bullpen and help immediately. He projects as a solid No. 2 pitcher with several above average pitches.
16. Arizona Diamondbacks
The Pick: Bobby Borchering, 3B/1B, Bishop Verot HS, Fla.
The buzz: Borchering is a big masher. He will most likely have to move to 1B as his defense is limited. He is a switch hitter who projects as a middle of the lineup hitter. With a young team already on the field the DBacks grab a player who they can take time to develop.
17. Arizona Diamondbacks - from Los Angeles Dodgers
The Pick: A.J. Pollock, OF, Notre Dame
The buzz: Pollock has been rumored with a lot of teams and goes to the Diamondbacks. His stock shot up following his performance in the Cape Cod league where he was named MVP.
18. Florida Marlins
The Pick: Chad James, Yukon HS, Okla.
The buzz: A 6-3 pitcher brings a knowledge of how to win to the Marlins. He is a solid left handed pitcher in a system that has been able to develop them. Has a good curve as well as good mechanics.
19. St. Louis Cardinals
The Pick: Shelby Miller, RHP, Brownwood HS, Texas
The buzz: A hard throwing right handed pitcher from Texas. A solid body and arm. The definition of a power pitcher. He will get to the big leagues and be a No. 3 pitcher even if he only develops at a slow rate. The tools are certainly there.
20. Toronto Blue Jays
The Pick: Chad Jenkins, RHP, Kennesaw State (Ga.)
The buzz: Jenkins finally comes off the board. A power sinker/power slider pitcher had Top 10 stuff. Hurt a little by the competition he played against but a very good pitcher.
21. Houston Astros
The Pick: Jiovanni Mier, Bonita HS, Calif.
The buzz: Mier was the No. 37 overall player in the RivalsHigh 100, but the No. 3 infielder. Mier is a free swinger but does not project much power.
22. Minnesota Twins
The Pick: Kyle Gibson, RHP, Missouri
The buzz: Gibson has a stress fracture in his wrist and has seen his draft stock fall. A bit of a risk but if he is medically clear it could be a great pick at No. 22.
23. Chicago White Sox
The Pick: Jared Mitchell, OF, LSU
The buzz: Mitchell is a two-sport athlete at LSU. Mitchell is very fast and can play all three OF positions. He has a few natural flaws in his swing that could be worked out when he stops playing football.
24. Los Angeles Angels - From New York Mets
The Pick: Randal Grichuk, OF, Rosenberg (TX) Lamar Consolidated
The buzz: Grichuk was the No. 22 overall player in the RivalsHigh 100 and the No. 4 overall outfielder. Grichuck can handle the bat and has good speed.
25. Los Angeles Angels - From New York Yankees
The Pick: Michael Trout, CF, Millville (NJ)
The buzz: Trout's bat and draft stock got hot as the weather did in New Jersey. He has good tools and projects as a solid center field player. Hit a New Jersey state record 18 home runs this season.
26. Milwaukee Brewers
The Pick: Eric Arnett, RHP, Indiana
The buzz: The lowest the Brewers have picked since 1983 and they go with a RHP from Indiana. Arnett is a tall sinker pitcher that was high on a lot of draft boards.
27. Seattle Mariners - From Philadelphia Phillies
The Pick: Nick Franklin, SS, Lake Brantley HS, Alamonte Springs, Fl.
The buzz: A switch hitter with not a lot of plus attributes but a lot of solid abilities. He is a grinder who looks more like an old school baseball player than a flashy new school guy.
28. Boston Red Sox
The Pick: Reymond Fuentes, Fernando Callego HS, Manati, Puerto Rico
The buzz: The Red Sox may have picked the Yankees pocket on this one. They have money and time to develop their next lead off hitter. He is a risk but has a world of speed.
29. New York Yankess - For Gerrit Cole
The Pick: Slade Heathcott, CF, Texarkana (TX) Texas
The buzz: Heathcott is a plus tooled OF that is a high ceiling guy. Slade has recovered well from his November ACL surgery. A lefty in the new Yankees stadium is very interesting.
30. Tampa Bay Rays
The Pick: LeVon Washington, 2b, Gainesville (FL) Buchholz
The buzz: A five-star prospect as ranked by RivalsHigh. Washington is an athlete that fits the Tampa Bay mold.
31. Chicago Cubs
The Pick: Brett Jackson, OF, California
The buzz: Jackson swings and misses a lot, but he has great speed and decent power. He only hit .238 in the Cape Cod League which is probably why he fell this far.
32. Colorado Rockies - From LA Angels
The Pick: Tim Wheeler,OF, Sacramento State
The buzz: Wheeler has a very high ceiling and is developing more power every season. He is a very solid hitter and has good speed. A good athlete that projects as an everyday player.
Supplemental 1st Round Picks
33. Seattle Mariners - for Raul Ibanez
The Pick: Steven Baron, C, John A. Ferguson School, Miami, FL.
The buzz: This is a interesting pick as Baron is commited to his education. They must have a good feeling about signing him.
34. Colorado Rockies - for Brian Fuentes
The Pick: Rex Brothers, LHP, Lipscomb Univ.
The buzz: Brothers is a steal at No. 34. Brothers is a first round talent that fell to the compensation picks.
35. Arizona Diamondbacks - for Orlando Hudson
The Pick: Matt Davidson, 3b, Yucaipa, Calif.
The buzz: A very solid pick for the Diamonbacks who continue to load up on young bats. They still have a couple more picks to grab some young arms.
36. Los Angeles Dodgers - for Derek Lowe
The Pick: Aaron Miller, LHP, Baylor
The buzz: Miller is a two-way standout from Baylor. Some teams had him projected on the offensive side, but at 6-3 and left handed he should be on the rubber.
37. Toronto Blue Jays - for A.J. Burnett
The Pick: James Paxton, LHP, Kentucky
The buzz: The Blue Jays must be happy to get this player at this spot. A player many thought they would take in the first round falls into their lap.
38. Chicago White Sox - for Orlando Cabrera
The Pick: Josh Phegley, C, Indiana
The buzz: Oddly switched from many other catchers who go early. He is a better offensive player than defensive. Despite calling his own games in college he may end up moved to 1B.
39. Milwaukee Brewers - for C.C. Sabathia
The Pick: Kentrail Davis, CF, Tennessee
The buzz: Davis is a draft eligible sophomore who saw his stock fall as the season progressed. He is also a Scott Boras guy who may have signability issues.
40. Los Angeles Angels - for Mark Texeira
The Pick: Tyler Skaggs, LHP, Santa Monica, Calif.
The buzz: Skaggs is committed to Cal. State Fullerton but may decide to get his career started. RivalsHigh had Skaggs as the Angels pick in Round One so getting him here is a nice bonus for LA.
41. Arizona Diamondbacks - for Juan Cruz
The Pick: Chris Owings, SS, Gilbert HS, South Carolina
The buzz: A bit of a surprise here by the Diamondbacks. His bat has steadily improved as he has grown. He is probably going to have to shift to 2B to stay in the bigs, and may top out as a long time utility player.
42. Los Angeles Angels - for Francisco Rodriguez
The Pick: Garrett Richards, RHP, Oklahoma
The buzz: Two bats and two arms for the Angels. Richards has just been recently added to the first round discussion. At 6-3 he has projectable size and power.
43. Cincinnati Reds - for Jeremy Affeldt
The Pick: Brad Boxburger, RHP, USC
The buzz: A "crafty right hander", if you will. Has the ability to be a starter but most likely a long reliever.
44. Texas Rangers - for Milton Bradley
The Pick: Tanner Scheppers, RHP, St. Paul Saints/Fresno State
The buzz: Some question his shoulder injury but at this point it is a risk/reward situation. This is a very good spot for the Rangers.
45. Arizona Diamondbacks - for Brandon Lyon
The Pick: Mike , CL, Boston College
The buzz: A closer and first basemen for Boston College. A solid athlete that can swing the bat, but he is probably going to be in the bullpen for Arizona.
46. Minnesota Twins - for Dennys Reyes
The Pick: Matt Bayshore, LHP, Indiana
The buzz: Bayshore is the third Indiana player taken in the draft. No surprise to see him go this late after a slow start, despite a strong finish to the season.
47. Milwaukee Brewers - for Brian Shouse
The Pick: Kyle Heckathorn, LHP, Kennesaw State (Ga.)
The buzz: A big power arm with a plus fastball. Serious arm strength with a power slider. The second Kennesaw State player to go.
48. Los Angeles Angels - for Jon Garland
The Pick: Tyler Kerher, LHP, Eastern Illinois Univ.
The buzz: A power arm with some command issues.
49. Pittsburgh Pirates - failure to sign Tanner Scheppers
The Pick: Victor Black, RHP, Dallas Baptist University
The buzz: Originally a 2006 pick by the Mets. He has closer type stuff but lacks some command.
