Report: Elway commits to Arizona State

Englewood (Colo.) Cherry Creek High School quarterback Jack Elway has verbally committed to Arizona State according to a report in the Rocky Mountain News and confirmed independently by ASUDevils.com with a source close to the recruitment.

Elway, the son of legendary former NFL quarterback John, committed to the Sun Devils following his team's 37-14 victory over Eaglecrest on Friday at Stutler Bowl. He had four touchdown passes in the win.

Due to the bye week, ASU recruiting coordinator and safeties coach Matt Lubick was in attendance at the game.

This season, Elway has completed 112 of 197 passes for 1,677 yards and 21 touchdowns with only three interceptions.

Elway visited ASU officially last weekend, and reported following the trip that he had the school as one of his co-favorites along with Oregon, with a decision likely to come after a trip to Eugene.

That trip did not take place before Elway's decision to pledge the Sun Devils.

ASU coach Dennis Erickson's coached under Elway's grandfather, Jack Elway Sr., at San Jose State (1979-81).

When asked following his trip if that pre-existing family relationship could have an impact on his decision, Elway said, "Yeah, I'd say it definitely could."

Elway, who also had offers from Cal, LSU and Oregon, had not returned a call seeking comment from ASUDevils.com at the time of this report's publication.

The Sun Devils now have nine confirmed verbal commitments in the 2009 class.
