Texas Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree has performed so well during his record-breaking freshman season that it was only a matter of time before he reached the top spot in the Rivals.com Power Rankings, which measure the nation's top players and coaches at each position.
That time is now.
Crabtree's three-touchdown effort in a 42-17 victory over Iowa State catapulted him to the No. 1 spot at wide receiver ahead of Louisville's Harry Douglas, who has missed the Cardinals' past two games with a sprained right ankle.
Midway through the season, Crabtree already has set an NCAA record for touchdown catches by a freshman. Crabtree has 70 receptions for 1,074 yards and 17 touchdowns to lead the nation in all three categories. He has caught at least two touchdown passes in each of his six games this season.
Crabtree's move atop the receiving rankings isn't the only change at the top this week.
Boston College's Matt Ryan displaced Kentucky's Andre' Woodson as the No. 1 quarterback after throwing four touchdown passes in a 55-24 triumph over Bowling Green. Woodson went 23 of 40 for 227 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in a 38-23 loss to South Carolina.
Kentucky's loss to South Carolina also resulted in Joker Phillips' removal from the top of the offensive coordinator rankings. LSU's Gary Crowton is the new No. 1 offensive coordinator after helping the Tigers rally for a 28-24 victory over Florida.
Ohio State's Malcolm Jenkins moved atop the defensive back rankings after helping limit Purdue's Dorien Bryant to two catches for minus-4 yards in the Buckeyes' 23-7 victory over the Boilermakers. Jenkins moved ahead of Kansas' Aqib Talib, who recorded an interception but also allowed a long touchdown pass to Jordy Nelson in the Jayhawks' 30-24 triumph over Kansas State.
Stanford's 24-23 upset of USC also had an impact on the power rankings. Michigan's Jake Long replaced USC's Sam Baker as the top offensive lineman and Ohio State's Jim Tressel took over for USC's Pete Carroll as the No. 1 coach.
The rating of a player and coach can fluctuate each week during the season depending on how they fared the previous week, but the power rankings measure overall career performances as well as their most recent results.
By the end of the season, our power rankings should provide an accurate indicator of which players and coaches were the best at their respective positions.
