Big 12 Week 3 Recap
Blake Szymanski threw for 411 yards and five TDs as he outdueled Bradley George in a 34-27 victory over I-AA Texas State. George threw for 311 yards and two TDs for the Bobcats. Szymanski threw for 412 yards last week in a win over Rice. Baylor ran for just 28 yards on 19 carries.
Next: Saturday, at Buffalo.
The defense played well, the offense didn't. The result was 16-6 loss to Florida State. The Buffs finished with minus-27 rushing yards on 25 carries. QB Cody Hawkins threw for 306 yards, with one TD and two picks. The touchdown didn't come until late in the game, after FSU had built a 16-0 lead.
Next: Saturday, vs. Miami University.
Iowa State
K Bret Culbertson tied a school record with five goals, including the game-winner with one second left, as the Cyclones upset Iowa 15-13. Four of Culbertson's field goals came in the first half. It was the first victory for new Cyclones coach Gene Chizik, whose team was coming off a loss to I-AA Northern Iowa.
Next: Saturday, at Toledo.
The Jayhawks rolled up 557 yards of offense in cruising to a 45-13 victory over Toledo. KU had 29 first downs despite three lost fumbles. Todd Reesing threw for 313 yard and four touchdowns, with each score going to a different receiver.
Next: Saturday, vs. Florida International.
Kansas State
James Johnson ran for 114 yards and three TDs as the Wildcats punished I-AA Missouri State 61-10. K-State scored three first-quarter touchdowns and cruised from there. Wildcats WR Deon Murphy scored on a reception and on a punt return. K-State held the Bears to 191 total yards and had five sacks.
Next: Sept. 29, at Texas.
The Tigers rushed for 272 yards and five touchdowns in rolling to a 52-24 victory over Western Michigan. Mizzou led 31-3 at halftime, thanks to two Chase Daniel TD passes. Daniel threw for 328 yards and ran for 60 and another score.
Next: Saturday, vs. Illinois State.
The Huskers played well early, but it ended up for naught in a 49-31 home loss to top-ranked USC. The Trojans rushed for 313 yards on 38 carries, an 8.2 yards-per-carry average that was the highest-ever by a Huskers opponent. Nebraska led 10-7 with 9:04 left in the first half, but it was all Trojans after that until a late flurry made the final score a bit more respectable.
Next: Saturday, vs. Ball State.
The Sooners built a 38-3 halftime lead en route to a 54-3 beatdown of Utah State. OU had 617 yards of offense, and got 100-yard games from Allen Patrick (113 on eight carries) and DeMarco Murray (100 on four carries, including a 92-yard TD run midway through the third quarter). Malcolm Kelly had two TD catches for the Sooners.
Next: Friday, at Tulsa.
Oklahoma State
Troy QB Omar Haugabook carved up the Cowboys' defense as the Trojans, from the Sun Belt Conference, upset the Cowboys 41-23 last Thursday. Haugabook threw for 371 yards and a TD and rushed for 49 yards and two more scores. Cowboys TB Keith Toston fumbled on the first play of the game, and Troy was in control the rest of the way.
Next: Saturday, vs. Texas Tech.
The Longhorns got two touchdown passes from Colt McCoy and 153 rushing yards from Jamaal Charles as they held off UCF 35-32 in the first game in the Knights' on-campus stadium. Texas squandered a 13-point lead before rallying. A 46-yard TD run by Charles gave Texas a late 11-point lead, but the victory wasn't secured until the Longhorns recovered an onside kick in the final minute.
Next: Saturday, vs. Rice.
Texas A&M
The Aggies rushed for 310 yards and six TDs in hammering Louisiana-Monroe 54-14. Mike Goodson led the way with 113 yards on 11 carries. The score was 7-7 late in the first quarter before A&M scored the next 34 points. The Aggies didn't have to punt. One negative: A&M allowed 215 rushing yards.
Next: Thursday, at Miami.
Texas Tech
Redshirt freshman Michael Crabtree had 11 catches for 244 yards and three TDs as the Red Raiders blasted Rice 59-24. Crabtree has eight touchdown catches this season. Graham Harrell threw for 414 yards and six TDs. Tech led 35-17 at halftime.
Next: Saturday, at Oklahoma State.
