Tyron the Trojan

Moreno Valley (Calif.) Rancho Verde offensive lineman Tyron Smith is a man of few words, but a day before attending Rising Star Camp at USC, the 6-foot-6, 265-pound five-star offensive tackle didn't need a verbose vocabulary to announce his college decision.

Tyron is a Trojan, giving USC commitment No. 8 in the class of 2008.

Soft-spoken and brief on explanation, Smith used three simple words to stir the echoes of Heritage Hall.

"I'm a Trojan," said Smith.

With little more than a cracked smile reflecting off the glass encased Heisman Trophies, Smith comes to USC Friday ready to end the recruiting process.

"I don't want to deal with all the phone calls anymore," said Smith, who was recruited by USC defensive line coach, David Watson. "It just got to be too much, so I knew I didn't want to keep (recruiting) going. It was exciting last year when it first started, and I didn't really think I'd be where I am today, but I'm ready to get this over with."

Smith first made the decision to become a Trojan in April. While it's often said that seeing is believing, Smith left the Trojans' first spring football scrimmage with the impression that feeling is believing.

"I took that (unofficial) visit to USC for a spring practice and it just felt right," said Smith. "It just felt like me - the school I fit in at. They play with intensity and they get after it. USC wins championships and they also have great academics."
