Ohio State's 38-17 victory on the road against previously unbeaten Iowa was impressive enough to lift Jim Tressel over Southern California's Pete Carroll in our power rankings, which measure the top players and coaches at each position.
Tressel wasn't the only coach moving to the top spot.
LSU's Bo Pelini replaced Virginia Tech's Bud Foster as the top defensive coordinator following the Hokies' 38-27 loss to Georgia Tech. LSU is ranked first in the nation in total defense, second in scoring defense and third in pass defense.
The ranking of a player and coach can fluctuate each week depending on how they fared the previous Saturday, but the power ratings measure their overall careers as well as their most recent performances.
For example, Ginn hasn't been made much of an impact as a kick returner so far this season.
Ginn is averaging only 15.9 yards per kickoff return and 8.8 yards per punt return, while Indiana's Marcus Thigpen leads the nation in kickoff return average and already has returned two kicks for touchdowns this season.
But we still believe Ginn's career achievements – which include five punt returns for touchdowns – make him the more dangerous special-teams player.
By the end of the season, our power ratings should provide an accurate indicator of which players and coaches were the best at their respective positions.
