Colonials top Duquesne 17-13

With revenge on their mind, the Robert Morris Colonials took on the Duquesne Dukes in the Steel City Showdown.

Playing in front of their home crowd, Robert Morris overcame a small fourth quarter deficit to defeat Duquesne by a score of 17-13.

Entering the third quarter down 13-10, Robert Morris took the ball on their 23 and opened up their passing game. On the fourth play of the drive, Jeff Sinclair aired it out to wide receiver Donte Jeter for 26 yards to move into Duquesne territory. Jeter took a shot after making the catch and missed the following play.

Luckily for the Colonials, he wasn’t needed, because Sinclair found wide receiver Duane Mitchell with a step on his man and let the 41 yard pass fly for a touchdown to give Robert Morris a 17-13 lead.

Duquesne had a chance late, possessing the ball on their 23 with 8:07 remaining. Quarterback Sean Patterson (20-of-34, 195 yards, one touchdown, one interception) moved the ball downfield with a series of short passes and timely runs from running back Larry McCoy (31 carries, 99 yards).

The Dukes had a first and goal from the six yard line but threw three incompletions including a ball off the tip of his receiver’s fingers and out of the back of the end zone on fourth down.

Robert Morris sealed the win when Sinclair (11-of-17, 146 yards, one touchdown, seven carries, 60 yards, one touchdown) converted a third and five with an eight yard run.

Robert Morris got on the board first with a Sinclair eleven yard bootleg run after a blocking a Duquesne punt. Duquesne answered later in the first quarter when Patterson found wide receiver Gianni Carter eight yards out.

The two teams traded field goals in the second quarter and were tied at 10 at the half. Duquesne added a field goal at the end of the third quarter to take a 13-10 lead and set up the finish.
