Warhawk Inside Slant - Arkansas Edition

Warhawk Inside Slant
Just as Head Coach Todd Berry started his career at the helm of the Warhawk program, his third season begins at War Memorial Stadium against a nationally ranked Arkansas Razorback team.  In that 2010 game, ULM fell 31-7 but not before putting a big scare in Bobby Petrino's team.   The Warhawks managed just 16 yards of total offense, but trailed just 7-0 at the half.

ULM has grown up and matured since that date, allowing the Warhawks to be in a better position to compete in 2012.  Provided this team can remain healthy, they should be ready to find themselves in the top half of the Sun Belt Conference standings.

NOTES, QUOTES

16 players return from the 2010 team that faced Arkansas.

2010's game saw 55,705 in attendance.  That total was the 15th largest crowd at War Memorial Stadium.

The Razorbacks boast seven Louisiana players, including three from ULM's back yard - David Hurd (West Monroe), DeQuinta Jones (Bastrop), and DeMarcus Hodge (Neville High - Monroe).

Pre-Season Game Ball Goes To: Strength &Conditioning coach Joe Girardi - looking up and down the roster, the Warhawks are without a doubt bigger, faster, and stronger as they enter the 2012 season.  Girardi was thrust into the position is the spring with the departure of John Grieco for the Oakland Raiders.  While none of the players sing Girardi's praises, all are quick to admit that they are in the best shape of their playing careers.

Keep An Eye On: Freshmen Jamal Danley (RT), Tony Cook (WR), and Trey Caldwell (DB) -  the freshman trio have all made names for themselves and are listed on the 2-deep depth chart.  Look for all of them to be in the mix for snaps during the season.

Quote To Note:

"I'm all healed up and feel 100% for the first time in years."

-RB Jyruss Edwards.

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

Looking Good: Running backs Jyruss Edwards and Centarius Donald look physically in better shape and both have looked even better in fall camp drills.   Look for the back duo to take a load off the passing game, as the offenseive line is ready to open holes for the establishment of the running game.

Still Needs Work: Special teams, especially place kicking, has struggled throughout fall drills.  Punting has made drastic improvements with both Connor Fryoux and Caleb Gammel pushing one another to continually improve.

Roster Report:

S Khari Usher will miss 6-8 weeks with a leg injury, look for him to return just in time for Sun Belt Conference action.

No other significant injuries reported throughout fall camp
