SDSU needed overtime, but still picks up win

The San Diego State men's basketball team improved its record to 7-1 on Saturday night when it beat UC Santa Barbara at the Thunderdome, 76-75, in overtime.

Point guard Xavier Thames led all Aztecs with 20 points, 10 rebounds and six assists and helped lift the Aztecs to their fourth straight win.

This was the second time in the last three games SDSU needed an extra period to beat its opponent. Last weekend, the Aztecs beat Long Beach State in overtime. After beating UCSB in overtime on Saturday, SDSU is making a strong push for Top 25 consideration.

"Super clutch game," senior forward Garrett Green tweeted after the game. "We know how to dig in and win. Our fans that made the trip were unbelievable tonight."

Green had 13 points and nine rebounds. Guard Chase Tapley added 16 points.

The Aztecs seven wins are tied with Duke and UNLV for the most in the nation. SDSU has also won 48 games in a row against unranked opponents.

The Aztecs are set to play next versus Creighton at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Viejas Arena.
