Greatest 100 Football Teams Of All-Time

It started back in March of 2011, the goal was simple. Put together a never before done list of the Top 100 New Mexico High School Football Teams of All-Time. It was a daunting task to say the least and it nearly took a two months of fact checking to figure out which exact 100 teams would be included.

THE GREATEST 100 TEAMS OF ALL-TIME

NMPreps.com Top 100 New Mexico Prep Football Teams Of All-Time List Was Compiled By Kyle Henderson of NMPreps.com.

The Rankings are based off team's final season record, points scored in a season, points allowed in a season, number of defensive shutouts in a season, margin of victory in a season, whether or not the team won the state title during that year, etc.

If you have any questions about the rankings please e-mail me at nmpreps@yahoo.com or join the message board conversation by becoming a member of NMPreps.com, the state's largest prep football website.

I'm a numbers guy and everyone that follows NMPreps.com knows that what I lack in writing skills, I make up for with graphs, charts, stats, etc. I devised a power ranking for each team that stood out throughout the years. Points for, points against, points scored in a season, points allowed in a season, number of shutouts in a season, number of games won, and the big one: whether or not a team won a state title at the end of the season.

Knowing that I could get all those numbers accurately that is the direction I went with the power rankings. Throughout all the feedback and e-mails I've received throughout the top 100 countdown, most has been positive, however there has been some sticklers commenting that the rankings are not accurate because of this and that.

My answer is this: All rankings are debatable and with the system that I used, I strongly feel that these rankings are the best depiction of the top 100 teams that you'll see. The system that I used excluded no team and the same principles were used to rank each team within the top 100.

The last teams left on the board: Look at the remaining teams on the board. It's the best of the best no doubt about it. Three Artesia teams remain. The 2006 team was led by Landry Jones now a Heisman Candidate at the University of Oklahoma. The 1973 Clovis Wildcats are the Wildcat team that most seem to forget because of their yearly program success, but during that season they had two running backs hit the 2,000-yard mark. Really Del Norte had a team of this caliber.

During the '74 season Del Norte outscored their opponents by a combined 397-35. They also posted nine shutouts on the season that year. Was the 1997 Goddard team better than the 1993 Goddard team? It's debatable, but most Rocket faithful will led you to believe that in 1993 the Rockets had what was their best team ever.

The 1963 Hornets were like the 2004 La Cueva Beas without the offense. They allowed just 22 points on the season and posted nine defensive shutouts. During 2003 and 2004 La Cueva posted some of the best teams ever. They nearly produced 10 D-1 athletes between the two years under Head Coach Fred Romero.

The 1975 Las Cruces team went 13-0 and the 1999 team won an outstanding 14 games on the season. Lovington has two teams left. The 1990 team that allowed just 68 points on the season and the 1995 team that was nationally ranked. Mayfield has just one team left and it was a good one.

The 2005 Trojans that went 14-0 and allowed just 80 points on the year. A team from Santa Fe made the cut? Yes, the Santa Fe High program which has struggled for what seems like forever produced some very talented teams in the late 70's. The '79 team posted six shutouts on the season.

Interesting facts that we've learned throughout ranking the top 100: Did you know that 30 plus year Head Clovis Football Coach Eric Roanhaus has only coached the Wildcats to one undefeated season which was in 2001 * A few years before Roanhaus took over the Wildcats, they posted one of their best seasons ever by going 14-0 in 1973 * 19 Artesia football teams are featured in the top 100 rankings *

The 2010 Artesia Bulldogs are the only team from 2010 to make the cut* Gadsden won three state titles in a row from 1953 to 1955 * Goddard has never posted a perfect season record wise under Coach Sam Jernigan * La Cueva went 26-0 from 2003 to 2004 * La Cueva held opponents to just 21 points during the 2004 season and beat Clovis 40-0 in the state finals * Just two Carlsbad teams made the cut, which was the 2000 and 1962 teams * Hobbs best team ever was in 1970 * The 1995 Lovignton Wildcas went 14-0 * Each team capsule takes Kyle Henderson 30 minutes

Hendo's Breakdown: It's hard to believe that in the over 30-years of Head Coaching for Eric Roanhaus, that just one team has gone undefeated under his storied program. Of course, throughout the years Clovis has played some of the toughest non-district schedules which has made them a title contender nearly every year. In 2000, the Wildcats went 4-6 with big losses to Eldorado, Hobbs, and to Carlsbad down the stretch. They were beaten by Manzano in the play-offs to end the dismal season. The following year, a seasoned group of varsity letterman stayed in the weight room nearly all season long for what would be the Wildcat season to remember. From the get-go, it was clear that Clovis was big time. With a 4-0 early season record they beat Borger, Texas to move to 5-0 on the season. From the Borger game on they would beat their next five regular season opponents by a combined 195-20. Along the way they shutout Borger, Goddard, Eldorado, and beat Hobbs and Carlsbad by a combined 71-14. The Mayfield Trojans and Clovis Wildcats both ended the season with a 10-0 regular season record and were seeded at the opposite ends of the play-offs. Clovis beat Las Cruces in the opening round 45-17, then beat Sandia 35-6, and it was the match up everyone wanted to see in the finals. 12-0 Clovis vs. 12-0 Mayfield. In a action packed game with furious hits and some huge offensive plays, Clovis Legendary Head Coach Eric Roanhaus would beat Mayfield Legendary Head Coach Jim Bradley in a game that goes down as one of the greatest title games ever. Hendo's Breakdown: One Head Coach that never gets enough credit is Goddard Head Coach Sam Jernigan. Though Goddard has never posted a perfect season under Jernigan (Record Wise) the Rockets came very close in the fall of 1997. They opened the season two monster wins. They beat Onate and Alamogordo in back-to-back weeks by a combined score of 79-0. At 3-0 after beating Andress, Texas they played region rival Artesia and were beaten 14-13. That one point loss would be their only loss of the season. They then beat Sandia, Highland, and Lovington by a combined 139-13. They had shut out four opponents through six games. In district they beat Hobbs 35-0, snuck past Clovis 22-18, and beat Roswell and Carlsbad handily. In the play-offs they pounded Manzano 40-10, beat Eldorado 42-20, and met Clovis a team they had only beat by four points in the finals. In a bone crushing type game, Goddard's defense came up big once again in a 3-0 shutout to win the state title game. Numbers wise, this looks to be the best ever Goddard Rocket's team, still one more team from Goddard is ranked higher. Please Submit To Players And Coaches From This Team To nmpreps@yahoo.com

Hendo's Breakdown: The greatest team to never win the state title is the 2001 Mayfield Trojans. As you read a few spots up, the 13-0 perfect Clovis Wildcats topped Mayfield in the 2001 title game 17-10. The 2001 Trojans were flat out dominate from the start of the season and won their first nine games by way of knockout. Literally the Trojans blasted everyone in their path. They beat Goddard 13-0, beat Carlsbad 49-0, beat Riverside, Texas 48-0, beat La Cueva 33-3, beat Sandia 42-0, beat Onate 28-0, beat Roswell 42-6, beat Gadsden 56-0, beat Los Lunas 42-0, and beat Alamogordo 45-7. Las Cruces gave them somewhat of a game 21-9, then the Trojans beat Manzano in the play-offs 37-7, beat La Cueva in the semifinals only 10-7 in a thriller, only to be beaten one week later in the finals to Clovis 17-10. Hendo's Breakdown: One of the best All-Time Lovington Wildcat Teams claimed the perfect season in 2001 under Head Coach Speedy Faith. After beating Artesia 34-28, the Wildcats led by Caden Jameson, Rusty Hargrove, Sean Sanchez, Beau James, Josh Faith, and James Compton continued the victories with wins over Silver, Los Alamos, West Las Vegas, and Hobbs. They beat every team in 3A that year by a combined score of 373-59. They finished the regular season 10-0, then beat Cobre 39-3, beat St. Michael's 49-20, and beat Robertson in the finals 59-3. In their last five games they scored an average of 49 points per game. Arguably one of Lovington's most dangerous offensive groups ever. Hendo's Breakdown: The Bulldogs were coming off back-to-back titles from the 1996 and the 1997 season, but the 1998 season is where they finally reached ultimate perfection. The Bulldogs had lost a total of three games in the last three years and while winning the title was grand, the perfect season by going undefeated made it that much sweeter in 1998. The Bulldogs buried Robertson in week one 66-8, then beat Hobbs, Roswell, and barely got passed Goddard 13-12. They beat larger schools like Carlsbad and Las Cruces with ease before going undefeated in the district. They finished out the year 10-0 and beat St. Pius X 33-14 in the play-offs, then beat Kirtland Central 42-14 in the semifinals before beating Ruidoso 35-9 in the finals. Their impressive 38 points per game average along with their perfect record makes them one of the best ever, but still not the best Artesia team of All-time, in fact they are not even close. Hendo's Breakdown: A simple well oiled machine, the Mayfield Trojans from the fall of 2003 put together one of the most outstanding season's in Trojan history. To open the season they beat Clovis 32-7, beat Carlsbad in a thriller 28-27, and then beat El Paso Coronado 48-0. They beat Las Cruces 30-6 to end the year at 9-1. In the play-offs defense continued to carry the team with a 34-6 win over Highland before beating Carlsbad 12-0 in the semifinals. Hendo's Breakdown: Mickey Reeves one of the best athletes ever to come out of New Mexico was finally a senior and after the Coyotes won the title his junior year, most expected Roswell to again make another run at the title. A three touchdown win over Goddard in the opener and a 35-0 win over Artesia were quick signs that Roswell was absolutely loaded. A close 14-9 win over Hanks, El Paso had Roswell at 5-0 and the Coyotes were riding an 11 game winning streak. A 42-0 win over Gallup and a 40-0 win over Hobbs made it seem that Roswell was nearly unbeatable, but in week eight the Coyotes were finally tamed at least for one week with a 14-7 loss to Clovis. They finished the year with a 3-1 district record and a 9-1 regular season record. In the play-offs they beat Farmington 41-17, beat Las Cruces 24-21 in overtime, and would meet up with Clovis for a shot at revenge in the title game. Hendo's Breakdown: The start of the 80's decade belonged to Eldorado. Going 12-1 in 1978 and going 11-2 in 1979, Eldorado had knocked on the state title door a few times, but had just run into some very good football teams to be denied the trophy. Led by future NFL quarterback Jim Everett, the Eagles would start the season with a 35-14 win over Santa Fe, the same team that beat them the year before in the state title game 19-15. After that three touchdown win, Eldorado had tons of momentum and went on to shut out their next five opponents. Wins over Sandia, Highland, Del Norte, and Manzano had the Eagles ranked number one with a 6-0 record. In district play they beat Belen, Rio Grande, Valley, and Cibola scoring an average of 35 points in their last five games. They then beat their first New Mexico team which was Las Cruces by a score of 28-0 and then beat Hobbs, Clovis, and Carlsbad in convincing fashion as well. Late in the season it seemed as though no team would come close to beating the Bulldogs and that assumption was right on. They beat Highland 40-14 in the title game. The Eagles kept up their winning ways and down the stretch seemed to find their rhythm on the defensive side of the football. They allowed just 20 total points during the last five games of the season with big wins over Roswell, Manzano, and Carlsbad. In the semifinals they beat Farmington 14-0 and in the finals against an undefeated Las Cruces team, they would fall 29-15. Hendo's Breakdown: The excitement was building in Bear Nation as La Cueva entered the 2009 season with a very talented senior squad and a junior running back by the name of Ronnie Daniels. After a beating Rio Grande 55-0 in the opener, the Bears gave up a two-touchdown lead to Manzano to fall 31-27 in a very thrilling football game. At 1-1, the Bears pressed on. They beat Clovis 27-14, beat Eldorado 49-0, beat Cibola 39-20, and then just rolled through the district outscoring the opposition by 216-22. They ended the season with a 9-1 record and then beat Hobbs 52-7 in the first round of the play-offs. The following week the got another shot at Manzano and though the Bears trailed in the final minutes of the game, they reeled off an impressive scoring drive and went for two to beat Manzano 25-24. Hendo's Breakdown: Clovis is just one of the few teams in New Mexico that could lose five games in a season and come back to win the title. A lot of their success comes from playing a daunting schedule each year and the other component to success is their Head Coach Eric Roanhaus. In 1993 they lost five games and then lost by just three in the title game against Goddard 24-21. The 1993 Goddard Rockets team is one of the best prep football teams ever. In 1994 Clovis did win the title, but started off the season 1-2. Their only two losses of the season came during weeks two and three. They lost to Amarillo, Texas and Plainview, Texas in back-to-back weeks. They then would win 10-games in a row. They teams like La Cueva 37-0, beat Goddard 6-0, beat Hobbs 37-14, and beat Gallup 29-8 in the semifinals. They then would earn revenge from the previous year's state title game by beating Goddard 14-10 to win the 4A title game. The following year they would lose to Mayfield 13-12 in the finals. In round one of the play-off against Cibola they beat the Cougars 42-18 and then beat Clovis 28-25 in the semifinals. The return of Head Coach Jim Bradley quickly restored the Mayfield Trojans and in the fall of 1996 the Trojans claimed the state title over Manzano. Sitting at 1-1 after a loss to Tucson Amphtheate, the Trojans rocked nearly all the opponents they faced. With withs over La Cueva, Manzano, and a 42-0 win over Las Cruces Mayfield ended the regular season at 9-1. in round one of the play-offs they were nearly upset by Goddard in a 27-26 overtime thriller. Hendo's Breakdown: Bradley's return as Head Coach of the Trojans sparked the surge of the Trojans and in 1995 the Trojans were off to a quick start at 3-0 heading into their match up with Irvin, Texas. A 10-0 loss put the Trojans at 3-1 on the year, but that was the only loss the Trojans would wear all season long. The next five weeks were signs that Mayfield was now unbeatable. After that loss they beat Albuquerque 21-0, beat Manzano 21-7, beat Alamogordo 34-6, beat Gadsden 34-6, and beat Onate 32-0. In their end of the year rivalry game against Las Cruces they won 56-22 and beat Manzano 42-3 in round one of the play-offs. A 23-7 win over Roswell paired them against a very solid Clovis Wildcats team in the title game. In one of the best games in prep football history, Mayfield beat Clovis 13-12. The 2007 team was led by Quarterback Matthew Sandoval and Athlete Nathan Enriquez. Two talented seniors that had both started as impact players the year before during their perfect run. After beating Clovis for the fifth time in a row during the opening week, the Trojans had their 28 game streak snapped in a 28-19 loss to Montwood, Texas. Sitting at 1-1, most automatically wrote off the Trojan's title chances, but all the Trojans did was continue to beat New Mexico teams. They beat Carlsbad 11-6, beat Manzano by two scores, beat La Cueva 6-2, and beat Rio Grande 19-14. The wins were not pretty, but the Trojans would pull out some epic close games to keep up their winning ways. They beat Portales in a thriller 17-16, beat St. Pius X 23-19 in the semifinals, and it seemed as though this was finally Silver's year. Hendo's Breakdown: Coming off a state title during the 2003 season Artesia returned a stellar group that most figured would help the Bulldogs defend their title. After a quick 4-0 start Artesia had pushed their winning streak to 11 and most were beginning to feel that no team in the land would stop the Bulldogs. Again, it would be Carlsbad to spoil the Bulldogs chance at perfection in a 24-14 loss. Artesia would again lose the following week to Las Cruces 35-29. After dropping two straight, Artesia seemed like a better team and they won their next seven games in a row. They beat district opponents Moriarty 37-0, beat Roswell 49-3, beat Goddard 42-7, and beat Onate 48-7 in the quarterfinal round of the play-offs. The next week in the semifinals they would beat Aztec in a nail biter 29-26, which set them to play 13-0 Silver. 42 points scored to no touchdowns allowed would give Artesia another prep football title. They beat Portales in their next district game 28-3, then beat Artesia 7-0 in a classic game. In the play-offs a three touchdown win over Grants set them up with a semifinal match up with Kirtland Central. They beat the Broncos 33-0 and were paired against Goddard in the finals. Having beat their last three opponents by a combined 64-0 the Wildcats were the big favorite having already beat Goddard by five earlier in the year. It was clear after their week two win over Aztec, that Belen was again the real deal, but this year they looked like a title contender. Belen then beat Deming in the play-offs 58-6, then beat Aztec again 58-19, before facing Goddard in the state finals. Hendo's Breakdown: Coming off two-state titles in a row in 2008 and in 2009, Goddard had lost a ton to graduation heading into the 2010 season. After beating Rio Rancho in the opener 34-3 and beating Alamogordo 27-7, it was evident that Goddard had not lost a step. They then beat Canyon, Texas, beat Clovis 21-0, beat Carlsbad 27-7, and beat Hobbs 42-7. Heading into their week eight game against Artesia their defense was giving up just three points per game. In the Wool Bowl, Artesia was defeated 39-20 in a game that really should of been 39-14. Two weeks later going up against a loaded Lovington Wildcat's team, Goddard would prevail in one of the greatest all-time football games in a 53-52 thriller. Goddard would end the season at 10-0, which was their first undefeated regular season in school history. During the semifinals of the play-offs 11-0 Goddard was set to travel to Artesia to face off with the four loss Artesia Bulldogs. The first year Artesia began to play football, they went 8-1 in the fall of '53. Only a few short seasons later, Artesia had a loaded team and were seeking their second prep football state title. They started out the season with wins over Lovington, then beat a very good Highland tam 16-6. They topped Odessa Ector 21-0 and then beat EP Ysleta 27-6, beat Dumas, Texas 20-0, beat Seminole, Texas 27-14 and were 6-0 heading into the Eddy County Rivalry game. After a thrilling 14-13 win over Carlsbad they won for more games and faced off with Highland in the 1957 title game. They had beaten Highland in the 1954 title game 26-13, and had beaten Highland earlier in the season 16-6. In a thrilling 27-26 final, Artesia would finish the perfect season at 12-0. While teams like Clovis and Mayfield topped the pre-season polls, Goddard felt they had enough talent to make another deep run. They started our a quick 3-0 with wins over EP Jefferson, Alamogordo, and a two touchdown win over EP Irvin. Playing regional rival Artesia, they would lose their first game of the season 28-14 which would snap their six game winning streak. They won their next three including a 21-19 thrilling win over Hobbs. Sitting at 6-1, they faced Clovis who they had beat in the 1993 title game 24-21. In a defensive stalemate, Clovis would avenge their last season's loss and win 6-0. Goddard would end the season at 8-2 and then bet Cibola, West Mesa, and Mayfield in the play-offs by a combined 73-6, which put them against Clovis once again for the state title game. Hendo's Breakdown: The mid to late 80's are some of the best Highland football teams of al-time. In 1986 they went 11-2 and beat Roswell in the finals, In 1988 they went 9-3, but would lost to Clovis 17-14 in the semifinals. Having trouble with the southern powers would be something they would have to get past in order to win their first title game in what seemed like ages. Highland started off the season by beating Santa Fe 66-6. Immediately, Highland was turning heads. They then beat La Cueva 28-13 and sitting at 3-0 with a lot of momentum, they would face Clovis, a team that beat them in the play-offs the previous year. Chance for redemption they were thinking, but Clovis was thinking same old story and would beat Highland 28-0. Highland would then fight their way to win their next six games and end the regular season at 9-1. They beat Sandia in the 34-10 in the opening round of the play-offs, beat Mayfield 6-0 in the semifinals and after beating their first southern power in years it was time to face Clovis one more time for the state finals. In a low scoring stale mate, Highland scored the games only touchdown and would win 6-0. Highland has not been back to the title game since. Their first title since 2004 came against Mayfield in a 31-14 contest that La Cueva controlled from the get-go. With Running Back Ronnie Daniels entering his senior season in 2010, most media outlets had the Bears as the strong contender to repeat as 5A Champs. They opened up the season with 42-0 win over Volcano Vista, then beat Valley 48-7. They beat Clovis 42-21 and then scored 110 points in their next two games to sit at 5-0 heading into their down south trip to Mayfield. They stomped Mayfield at the Field of Dreams 45-12, in a game where Daniels ran for 200-yards, scored four touchdowns, and had two interceptions on defense. They were 9-0 heading into their match up with 8-1 Manzano, in a key district game. In one of the most memorable shoot-outs maybe ever, Manazano upset La Cueva 56-55. La Cueva seemed wounded after the loss and barley beat a 5-7 Clovis team 21-14. They then headed to Mayfield for a rematch of that week five game that they won by 33 points. In a game where Daniels ran for more than 300-yards, Mayfield's defense came through inthe end to force a shocking 21-17 upset win at the Field of Dreams. While most knew that Eldorado would flirt with the elite eight or final four, no one knew that in the end Eldorado would be just five points away from being a perfect 13-0. They started out 2-0 after a thrilling 22-21 win over Clovis in week two. They then beat Cibola, La Cueva, and were sitting at 4-0 heading into their week five contest with Mayfield. The Trojans were riding a 40 game win streak against New Mexico teams and down 26-20 to Eldorado in Las Cruces. The Trojans had four down from the five-yard line to win the game. Four straight stuffs from Eldorado sealed the game in dramatic fashion. Eldorado then faced Clovis in the semifinals a team they had beaten 22-21 back in week two.
