Wynn out, Cain named starter for bowl game

In a development late Friday night, the Utah Utes learned that starting quarterback Jordan Wynn had sustained a shoulder injury, requiring surgery and rendering him unavailable to play in the Utes' upcoming bowl game.

Senior Terrance Cain will start in Wynn's place. Cain has had success as a starter at Utah, going 9-1. He stumbled however in his short appearance against BYU last Saturday at Rice-Eccles stadium, tossing two interceptions, his only two of the season. Cain, notorious for his accuracy is 51-72 on the season for a 70.8 completion percentage.

Cain poses more of a running threat than does Wynn, but the Utes have yet to make the most of that advantage this season. Cain has rushed 11 times for a net of 66 yards on the year, but will likely look to incorporate that aspect of his game more going into the bowl game with more preparation time in light of the bowl schedule.

Head coach Kyle Whittingham addressed Wynn's situation Saturday at Rice-Eccles Stadium just prior to practice.

"I got the call last night. There as an MRI yesterday because he was sore and not feeling right," explained Whittingham. "I don't know exactly when the injury occurred, neither does he. He got banged up at the Iowa State game, and a couple other times through the season. So it's hard to know exactly."

More troubling than Wynn's absence at the bowl game is the fact that following surgery, he will be placed on a six month rehabilitation plan. The Utes anticipate that he will miss all of spring ball because of the injury.

"Bottom line is Terrance Cain will be the starter. Jordan will be on a six month rehab program, and will miss spring ball; he'll be ready for summer conditioning," concluded Whittingham.
