When academics and athletics collide
On Oct. 30, Miami (Fla.) Northwestern principal Charles Hankerson fired football coach Billy Rolle.
The move, which came with just two games remaining in the season, infuriated alumni and boosters of the program.
Three days later, Hankerson reinstated Rolle. Soon after, Hankerson announced he was leaving - first immediately, then at the end of the school year.
Sound crazy? It is.
The situation shows what can happen when dreams of success on the athletic field run into desires for success in academics.
It's a fight we feel is being waged in numerous places around the country.
Usually, however, it is done out of the glare of the public spotlight that Northwestern is facing.
The Miami Herald's Kathleen McGrory - with contributions from Andre C. Fernandez - produced an inside look at the school and this issue in Saturday's edition of the paper.
It is battle where there are no true winners.
And it's a great read (Click here for the story).
