Yahoo! Sports Inside Slant - Warhawks

Warhawk Inside Slant - Auburn
Coach Todd Berry's word for the 15 penalties his Warhawks were flagged for in their 21-20 win over Southeastern Louisiana?

"Frustrating."

And the three turnovers (two lost fumbles, one interception)?

"Frustrating."

But ugly as it was, the comeback victory got the Warhawks, who were trailing 20-14 going into the fourth quarter, out of the ranks of the winless.

Berry hopes his team learns from its struggle against the FCS-level Lions.

"I'm not used to that," he said of the turnovers and penalties, "and I'm going to get to the bottom of that because we have to be a more intelligent football team.  I challenged the team about it after the game because these are things we cover over and over again. I'm trying to smile about the victory, but it still sets me off about that kind of stuff.  That's not the way we play, and that's not the way I'm used to seeing a football team play."

One bright spot in the evening for the Warhawks was the play of redshirt freshman Kolton Browning. After accumulating 350 yards in total offense in his previous outing, Browning threw for 249 yards and once again led the Warhawks in rushing with 79 yards.

But he and the Warhawks have a big challenge coming up.

They play their second SEC foe of the season, when they travel to Auburn for their next game. The Warhawks opened with a 31-7 loss at Arkansas.  After facing the undefeated Tigers, the Warhawks are back home to host Florida Atlantic.

NOTES, QUOTES

RB Frank Goodin continues to struggle to get his game going. He had 43 yards on 19 rushes against Southeastern Louisiana, giving him just 101 yards rushing in three games. He came into the season needing 874 yards to pass Calvin Dawson in the record book.

ULM remains tough against the run. The Warhawks held the Lions to just 54 yards on the ground, the eighth time in their last 14 games they have held an opponent under 100 yards rushing.

ULM's 15 penalties fell two short of the school record of 17, which was set in 2002 against McNeese State and Utah.

Game Ball Goes To:   WR Tavarese Maye-A redshirt freshman, Maye had three catches for 54 yards. His 47-yard reception early in the fourth quarter provided the Warhawks with their third and decisive touchdown in the win over Southeastern Louisiana.

Keep An Eye On:   LB Cameron Blakes-The sophomore came up with two big plays in the win, registering the first sack and first interceptions of his career. The interception came on Southeastern Louisiana's final series and sealed the win for the Warhawks. Blakes is second on the team with 24 tackles.

Quote To Note: "We hurt ourselves doing that, and it killed our drives. We need to pay attention to the details and do the little things."
-WR Anthony McCall, on the 15 penalties against ULM.

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

Looking Good:   QB Kolton Browning produced more than 300 yards total offense for a second consecutive week, with 75 yards rushing and 249 passing. WR Anthony McCall had eight receptions and scored when he recovered WR Luther Ambrose's fumble in the end zone. The offensive line didn't give up a sack. The defense held Southeastern Louisiana to just 54 yards rushing and got to the Lions for three sacks.

Still Needs Work:   The Warhawks had a whopping 15 penalties for 121 yards and had six fumbles, two of them recovered by Southeastern Louisiana. The offense averaged just 2.2 yards per rush.

Roster Report:

Junior WR Luther Ambrose had a 39-yard reception in the second quarter, the longest play from scrimmage for ULM this season.

Junior WR Anthony McCall's eight receptions were a career high as were sophomore WR Brent Leonard's six catches.
