Despite the 31-7 final score, ULM came out of its game at Arkansas encouraged about its future.

For three quarters, the defense kept the Warhawks in the game before the Razorbacks broke loose for 17 points over the final 15 minutes.

The Warhawks came up with three turnovers, including an interception of highly touted Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett. This from a unit that features eight new starters and is playing a new 3-3-5 scheme.

Senior linebacker Theo Smith said that the guy will benefit the young guys on defense. "Since they've seen we can stop big-play guys on big teams, they can be more confident in our guys and run it harder," Smith said.

The Warhawks ended up surrendering 400 yards passing but held Arkansas to less than 100 on the ground.

The problem was that the Warhawks failed to capitalize on any of the turnovers. They went three-and-out following the first fumble recovery, ran only two plays following the interception before time ran out in the first half, and turned it back over on an interception following their second fumble recovery.

They rushed for 116 yards but had only 72 passing and had two turnovers.

"They played like redshirt freshmen," coach Todd Berry said. "They showed some of the things we're excited about, but they had some mistakes too that ended up hurting our opportunities."

The Warhawks, who were getting a late start into the season, are back on the road again for their next game, opening Sun Belt Conference play at Arkansas State. ULM's first home game is Sept. 25 against Southeastern Louisiana.

RB Frank Goodin got off to a slow start in his quest to become ULM's all-time leading rusher. He netted only 44 yards on 12 carries against Arkansas. He came into the game needing 874 yards to pass record-holder Calvin Dawson, who finished his career with 3,378 yards.

ULM held Arkansas to 99 net yards rushing. The Warhawks have held seven of their last 12 opponents to double-digit yardage on the ground.

A dozen players made their first starts for ULM: redshirt freshman QB Kolton Browning, redshirt freshman RB Jyruss Edwards, redshirt freshman WR Tavarese Maye, sophomore LT Patrick Dvoracek, junior C Ryan McCaul, junior RT Anthony Montgomery, junior DE Ken Dorsey, senior NT Bryan Glenn, junior LB Jason Edwards, sophomore LB Cameron Blakes, sophomore CB Robert Nelson and sophomore S Khairi Usher.

Game Ball Goes To:   LB Jason Edwards-A junior making his first career start, Edwards made 11 stops for the Warhawks. He had nine solo stops and one tackle for loss.

Keep An Eye On:   S Khairi Usher-A sophomore, Usher stepped up with 10 tackles in his first career start. He also forced a fumble and broke up a pass.

Quote To Note: "We made some plays, but we didn't make enough of them. I thought we played pretty well on defense and pretty dysfunctional on offense. Most of that had to do with a guy or two sabotaging a play."
-Coach Todd Berry, on ULM's play in the loss to Arkansas.

Looking Good:   ULM held Arkansas to 99 net yards rushing, getting to Razorback QB Ryan Mallett for two sacks. LB Jason Edwards and S Khairi Usher both first-time starters, were in double digits in tackles, and CB Robert Nelson was one short of joining them. P Aaron Munoz had a nice day in his collegiate debut, averaging 41.6 yards on nine attempts with a long of 60 yards.

Still Needs Work:   The Warhawks saw Mallett go off for 28-of-43 passing for 400 yards. ULM was within a touchdown of the Razorbacks at halftime but wilted in the second half. QB Kolton Browning was only 7-of-17 passing (74 yards) in his debut with an interception and a touchdown. He also was sacked three times.

Roster Report:

P Aaron Munoz, a redshirt freshman, got off a 60-yarder on his first career punt. He averaged 41.6 on nine attempts.

Senior RB Frank Goodin did not start because of an undisclosed injury but ended up as ULM's leading rusher with 12 carries for 44 yards.
