Mount Vernon Upsets No. 1 New Ro

Westchester's biggest rivalry served up enough excitement to satisfy even a basketball skeptic. With one survey of the gym, the rivalry was clear half purple for the New Ro and the other half with burgundy and gold for the Knights.

The Westchester County Center would be loaded with fans on both sides. Former Mount Vernon Knights Michael Coburn, Jonathan Mitchell, Sean Harris, and Sherrod Wright came out to support their home team. The young Mount Vernon No. 8 ranked team did not disappoint, running through the No 1 state ranked New Rochelle team 75-61.

In the first quarter, the Knights would strike first leading midway through the quarter 6-4. Senior Knight Brandon White would score two off the glass with New Ro junior P.J. Torres received his second foul. Hinds drove down the court to hit a 3-pointer from the top of arc to cap off a 6-0 run. At the 1:07 mark, Antoine Mason answers back with a three-pointer from the corner 12-7 for the Huguenots. New Ro's senior Eric Watson would receive his first foul sending Hinds to the line to score two 14-7. In the closing minutes of the quarter Knight's junior Jarmell Walker would deflect New Ro senior A.J. Burton as the buzzer closed the first quarter.

The Knights continued to lead in the second quarter after a personal foul was called on senior Huguenot, Mike Dwyer. Hinds would make one at the line and then turn around and rebound his own ball scoring two 17-7. Mason answered back scoring back-to- back points inching up new Ro's score 17-11. Burton would add two with a lay-up. Mason would receive his third personal foul off a drive on Jabarie Hinds. Mason then would push White under the basket and receive a technical foul.

The Knights led 21-15 at the 4:20 mark. Torres and Mason are taken out of the game. A foul is called on White sending New Ro senior Steve Whittingham to line to make one. Hinds then made a huge play with a steal off of Burton and breaks away. Dwyer is then fouled and Hinds goes to the line 24-16. A foul would then be called on White and New Ro Steve Whittingham misses one and scores one at the line. Hinds would dish a tough inside shot to sophomore Marshal who made one at the line 27-17. Burton then feeds the ball to junior Chris Burton to lay two in 27-19. With 27:9 second left in the quarter, sophomore Knight Will Robinson gets the steal and misses the shot. Hinds would recover the ball and score two more points for the Knight at the end of the half 34-22.

The teams return to the floor in the third quarter with New Ro players Torres, Mason and Dwyer in foul trouble. Torres makes a lay-up and junior Knight Khalid Samuels dishes to White to put two on the board for the Knights 36-26. Senior guard Lateef Belfor hits a three-pointer 40-30. Hinds then nails a three-pointer from the corner. The Knights would control the quarter finish on top 49-31.

At the top of the fourth quarter, Samuels dishes the ball to sophomore Jarrell Marshal who banks a shot off the corner. Mason answers back with two but the Knights still lead 51-35. Burton receives his fourth foul. White passes the ball to Marshall and he hits the jumper. White receives his fourth foul and Torres goes to the line for one and one 53-37. Samuels drives down the court dishes to Marshal for a two-handed dunked 57-37. Mason lays two in and Whittingham receives his first foul. Burton makes a one hand shot with Torres hitting a deep 3-pointer. The Knights still lead 57-44 3:51 mark. Mason then makes an up and under shot 59-46. Torres receives another personal foul sending sophomore Isaiah Cousins to the line for two 62-46. Torres would later foul out with 2:24 left in game play. The Knights controlled the game throughout the rest of the quarter.

Mount Vernon Knight Jabarie Hinds led in all scoring with 25 points. Khalid Samuels added 15 points respectfully. The young sophomores, William Robinson, Isaiah Cousins and Jarrell Marshall added a combined for 24 points.

New Rochelle Antoine Mason led in scoring for his team with 24 points. PJ Torres would add 14 points.
