The RivalsHigh Game of the Week lived up to everything that was expected ... with one exception: The final score.
No. 59 Butler 31,
No. 66 Independence 24
While the two are perennial powers in the Charlotte, N.C., area, a victory for Butler in this game is unusual.
Independence had taken 14 of the 16 games between the schools - and figured it would again tonight, especially after the game was moved to Independence High after the normal neutral site was unavailable.
Friday night, however, Butler prevailed. Overcoming a rough start in the process.
Butler looked like it was going in on its third possession, but fumbled at the goal line, according to the game story by Langston Wertz Jr. of The Charlotte Observer (read the whole story here).
Independence answered quickly, taking a 7-0 lead two plays later on an 81-yard TD pass from Anthony Carrothers to Kyle Greg.
Butler, however, didn't fold. It reeled off the next 24 points on the way to a 31-10 lead.
Independence rallied in the second half, pulling to within 31-24 with 4:31 to go.
Independence looked like it might go in for the tying score, but Butler forced a fumble inside the 20 to seal the game.
The victory denied Independence its eighth undefeated regular season in nine years. Even more impressive, it dealt Independence only its second home loss since 1999.
