Practice Insider: Dealing with the depth
As one door closes for a player, it swings open for another. Nowhere is that more true than at a USC football practice where players are shuffled in and out of the lineup on a regular basis.
One day you're a starter. The next day you're watching - and vice versa.
Offensive tackle Butch Lewis played with the first team Thursday, as USC tried to rest Charles Brown and his sore back.
With Brown getting some rest, Lewis had a chance to put his skills on display, hoping to out-duel his teammate.
"Charles is a great player. I love battling against him," Lewis said. "That's the only way to get better. That's how I know I am getting better - if we're splitting reps with the ones. That means someone is giving me credit. That means I must be doing my job.
"He's the ideal person to compete with."
