Notebook: Morrison breaks ankle

Several players returned to practice from injury and suspension on Tuesday, and the linebacker group has some shifting as a result. Read about that and more in our practice notebook.

Another comeback

Morris Wooten wasn't the only linebacker who returned to action Tuesday.

Junior Gerald Munns was back on the practice field after missing the past week following surgery to repair his broken left pinky finger.

He was wearing a cast covering the injured finger.

"My hand was fine [in practice]," Munns said. "It was a little sore at times when we were going physical on some inside runs, but for the most part it felt pretty good. I've got a good, solid cast. It'll be fine for the game."

Munns said he will be in the cast for three to five weeks.

With Munns and Wooten back, the line backing corps looks much different than it did a week ago.

The first team had Mike Nixon on the weak side, Munns in the middle and Travis Goethel on the strong side.

The second team was lined up with Ryan McFoy on the weak side, Wooten in the middle and Shelly Lyons slid over to the strong side.

Two new injuries

Defensive tackle Saia Falahola and running back James Morrison were both injured at Tuesday's practice.

Falahola suffered a fracture in his right hand. He left the practice field briefly, but returned with a cast on the injured hand and continued to practice.

Erickson said Falahola will be fine to play.

Morrison on the other hand, didn't fare as well. He was playing he role of Knowshon Moreno on the scout team when he broke his ankle.

Erickson said it isn't a bad break, but Morrisson will be out several months.

First team reps

Several players who have been primarily on the second team were splitting time with starters at the respective positions Tuesday.

Cornerback Terell Carr took some reps with the No. 1 defense opposite of Omar Bolden.

Lawrence Guy got some reps alongside David Smith at defensive tackle.

Center Garth Gerhart spent some time snapping the ball to Carpenter in team drills.

And Tom Njunge got some action with the first team at right tackle.

In all of these cases, the player who had been starting was still taking a majority of the reps with the starters.

Quick hits

  • Keegan Herring (hamstring) and Brandon Magee (pectoral) did not participate Tuesday.

  • Dimitri Nance was wearing a cast over his right hand Tuesday. The junior running back reportedly tore a thumb ligament during the UNLV game.

  • Tight end Andrew Pettes participated in practice after missing last week with a groin injury.

  • With Munns and Wooten back, linebackers Oliver Aaron and Jeff Bereuter were on the scout team Tuesday.
