Johnathan Franklin has high hopes
Incoming UCLA freshman running back Johnathan Franklin from Los Angeles (Calif.) Dorsey isn't your typical student-athlete. He is as socially conscious as he is talented and don't be surprised if this young man makes you proud as Bruin, not only for his exploits on the football field, but the profound difference he will make off of it.
BruinBlitz.com was able to catch up with the Bruin freshman running back, who is nicknamed "Jet Ski" for his explosive speed, to see how is early days as a Bruin are going.
"Things are going good," Franklin said. "As far as balancing time, that is the tough part. Every minute is accounted for."
"Classes are easy," Franklin said. "The tutors the school supplies us with, if you take advantage of it and the office hours they give us, it's not that tough. You just have to have the mindset to be committed."
"As far as football, it's at a faster pace, but is not that fast," Franklin said. "The reality is football is football."
"If you work hard and you are dedicated to the game, success will come in the end," Franklin said. "I'm working my way up and I'm waiting for camp. I'm hoping to make the most of the opportunity."
"This freshman class wants to bring in a whole new swagger and focus to UCLA," Franklin said. "We are going to be faster, more physical and we are going to play more aggressively."
The Rose Bowl on September 1st is going to be a long way from high school for all of the incoming freshmen, Franklin, like the other freshmen is expected to be in uniform.
"That day is one thing that is hard to describe," Franklin said. "I may have tears in my eyes."
"My goal is to change the fans mindset to really support this football team and believe in us," Franklin said. "That starts on September 1st."
Football is a very important part of Franklin's life, but it isn't the only thing that Franklin is passionate about. While many young folks are busy partying, this young man is currently writing a very important book.
"Basically it is an eye opener about the "N" word and the "B" word, how they are derogatory words," Franklin said. "It is also about gang banging, drugs, teen pregnancy and not being limited in life."
Obviously Franklin is very thoughtful and wants to make a difference in life. It is impressive indeed, for one so young, to want to tackle some of modern America's more perplexing problems proving that Franklin is more than just a jock.
