Sherman puts a call in to Jerod
Texas A&M commit and DeSoto defensive lineman Tony Jerod got a call from new head coach Mike Sherman this weekend.
Unfortunately for Sherman, Jerod wasn't around to take it.
"He called me and left me a message because I didn't get to the phone" said the 6-foot-5, 252 pound Jerod. "He told me that he wanted to talk to me and meet me. He couldn't do that right now because he's still in the NFL. He gave me his number and asked me to call him."
Although Jerod didn't get a chance to talk to the new Aggie boss, Jerod did talk to A&M assistant Stan Eggen who has been recruiting him for most of the last two years.
"Coach Eggen was telling me to stay firm" he said. "He said that A&M is a great school. He didn't know about the situation on the assistant coaches. Even if he didn't get a position, he said that he knows that A&M is a great place and that I know that too."
However, Jerod is hearing from numerous other schools as well.
"Cyrus Gray(Gray, DeSoto teammate) and I are going to Kansas this upcoming weekend" said Jerod. "Cyrus texted me last week that Coach Tim Beck was going to be at school. The next day, Cyrus told me when he left Coach Meadows' office that he was going to go to visit Kansas. I just said that I would go up there with him. I talked to Coach Beck after Cyrus left and told him that."
In fact, Jerod was supposed to be at USC for an official visit this past weekend.
"Coach (Ken)Ken Norton told me to call him if we lost (Desoto did indeed lose in overtime to Hebron the weekend before last) but I didn't call him. He didn't hear from me so he just figured that we won. We didn't talk until the day before I was supposed to visit them. It was too late to so I had to reschedule. I haven't set up a date yet."
Jerod has also tentatively set up a visit with Texas in January.
"They wanted me to come in this weekend but I'm going to Kansas this weekend" he said. "They are going to come back to school this week and that's when we will set it up."
There are three other schools in the mix as well.
"Tulsa was my second offer" he said. "One of my dad's high school coaches is coaching up there now. My cousin is coaching up there too and they have been talking to my dad. I talked to Michigan State again. They came back to school and he wants to set up an official visit. He's coming back this week with the defensive line coach. Texas Tech is supposed to be back up at school too."
Jerod said that he would have in homes this week with coaches from Texas Tech, Texas, and perhaps Tulsa. So far, the increased attention hasn't fazed him.
"I'm getting used to it now" said Jerod. "It was like it was in the beginning before I committed. It's like the same thing all over again."
