Irish keep in touch with Gray

Where Jonas Gray fits into Notre Dame's recruiting picture remains up for discussion. But after a junior day visit to South Bend earlier this month, the 5-foot-9, 206-pound running back believes he could find a place in the Irish backfield.

"I think I show a lot of characteristics of Robert Hughes, but I think I'm a lot faster," Gray said. "I'm not sure I'm faster than Armando Allen, but I think I have great speed and great vision. I think I'm maybe more of a Travis Thomas type of running back."

Gray has seen enough of Notre Dame in the past year to make those comparisons. The standout from Detroit Country Day visited South Bend for a game last fall and saw the Irish rally against Michigan State. He's also hit both Notre Dame junior days and traveled to San Antonio, Texas in January for the junior combine. That's where he met Hughes, Allen and a handful of other incoming Irish freshmen.
