Practice Notebook: Redshirt good for Fannin

There's little doubt that freshman Mario Fannin could have played and probably helped the Tigers this fall. But the early decision to redshirt the running back/athlete has turned out to be a good one.

"I'm really glad I did it," said Fannin. "It's gotten me stronger and faster. I've developed more as an athlete overall. At first, I didn't like it. I look back on it now and I'm glad I did it."

Bowl practices are much more than just preparing the team to face Nebraska in the Cotton Bowl. All the young players including 22 that redshirted this fall receive a lot of extra practice time. They'll even play in a couple of scrimmages once they get to Dallas.

It's a great opportunity for players like Fannin to get an early start on spring practice and the 2007 season.

"All of us incoming freshmen, we all feel like we're better and more developed," said Fannin. "We've all gotten a lot stronger and faster. Overall, I think we'll be a good class. I can't wait to see us next year."
