Orange Bowl Bound

Jacksonville, Florida-- Riley Skinner leads Wake to victory in front of his home town.

Skinner completed a beautiful 45-yard pass to Willie Idlette late in the fourth quarter to put Sam Swank in position to hit the game winning field goal. Skinner, a redshirt freshman that has surprised the ACC all year with his big play ability, completed 14 passes for 202-yards in the same state he led Jacksonville Bolles High School to a (14-0) season and a class 3-A state title.

The crown was as intense as any crowd in Wake Forest history, and the coaches were prepared. The Demon Deacons defense, led by Jon Abbate took an odd approach to stopping Georgia Tech but the most important things is they shut the Yellow Jackets down. Defensive coordinator Dean Hood had confidence to play man to man on G-Tech wide redceiver Calvin Johnson, and although Johnson put up good numbers, the Georgia Tech offense was thrown out of sync.

Four year starter Reggie Ball was inconsistent all day completing only 9-of-29 passing attempts for 127-yards. Ball spent most of the day with Abbate and other defenders in his face causing him to be thrown off for most of the game.

In a game where there weren't any touchdowns scored you have to give the MVP award to Abbate. The hard nosed linebacker made 15 tackles and 1 sack. He hurried the quarterback several times and help lead the defense to another shut down performance.
