Jones' stock is soaring
A few weeks ago safety Joshua Jones of Walled Lake Western High School surprised many when he selected the University of Toledo. Most analysts believed that it was only a matter of time before Jones picked up multiple BCS offers. That is exactly what has happened and Jones is one of the fastest rising recruits in the state of Michigan. SpartanMag.com spoke with the 6-foot-2, 203-pound prospect and got the latest details.
Jones, who is rated a 3-star recruit and the #38 safety in the nation, currently has 8 offers on the table including recent BCS scholarships from Iowa and Illinois. Spartanmag.com asked him about his thoughts on the recruiting process and the schools that are showing him a high-level of interest that have yet to offer.
"Recruiting is going great it has been an exciting experience," Jones said. "Pittsburgh seems like they are very close to offering. Michigan State has said they will offer if I show up and do well at a day of their camp."
The Spartans are looking to add a safety to this class and several talented prospects are vying for an offer from Coach Dantonio and his staff. Based on our evaluation of Jones he is definitely one of the top candidates to earn and offer after camp. We asked him about his thoughts on Michigan State University.
"Michigan State is a great program with great coaches," Jones said. "I speak sometimes with the secondary coach, Coach Barnett and Coach Salem is my primary recruiter. I like Michigan State a lot. They are a winning program every year."
Jones indicated that he would like to make his decision prior to his senior year. All of the recent interest has caused him him to take a step back and analyze what he i slooking for in a college. He talked with SpartanMag.com about that and what type of feedback he has received from the coaches that stopped into his high school during the spring evaluation period.
"The coaches have told me that besides the way I play they also like me as a person and my personality," he said. "As far as what I am looking for, it is the school itself. The city or town that the school is in, the campus, the facilities all that plus more is important to me."
Jones indicated that he has friends and acquaintance at several of the schools that are actively recruiting him. The University of Iowa has a commitment from safety Delano Hill of Detroit Cass Tech High School who Jones knows very well. The Fighting Illini have 2012 Birmingham Brother Rice standout running back Devin Church and he is also familiar with 4-star Spartan Jamal Lyles from Southfield Lathrup High School.
In addition to the Spartan Camp, Jones is hoping to attend the Sound Mind Sound Body Camp that will be held next week in Southfield. The camp will feature numerous top prospects from not only Michigan but around the Midwest. Last year Jamal Lyles performed so well at that camp, that the Michigan State staff offered him shortly afterwards.
SpartanMag.com will be sure to keep an eye out for Jones at the Sound Mind Sound Body and the Spartan Elite Player Camp. He is definitely on the short list of players that we expect could receive a Michigan State scholarship offer.
