Coach's Corner: SEC Championship Game

Auburn (12-0, 8-0) meets South Carolina (9-3, 5-3) in the Southeastern Conference Championship Game in Atlanta's Georgia Dome Saturday at 4 PM. The game will be televised nationally by CBS.


Steve Spurrier will lead South Carolina into their first appearance in the SECCG. No stranger to the game himself, Spurrier won 6 SEC titles during his tenure at Florida, and won an ACC title at Duke prior to bringing Florida back to relevance in the SEC. South Carolina's last conference championship was an ACC title back in the sixties.

Auburn's Gene Chizik\ will be making his second appearance in the championship game, his first as a head coach. Chizik was Defensive Coordinator when Auburn's unbeaten 2004 team beat Tennessee for the title.

Last Time We Met

Auburn and South Carolina met in Jordan-Hare Stadium in the fourth game of this season, on September 25th. South Carolina jumped out to a 20-7 lead, and Auburn scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to win 35-27. Both fourth quarter scores by Auburn came after fumbles by Carolina QB Stephen Garcia.

Carolina's freshman sensation running back Marcus Lattimore had 14 carries for 33 yards in the game, and Carolina went to its passing game. Garcia was 15-of-21 passing, for 235 yards and 3 touchdowns. Wide receiver Alshon Jeffery caught 8 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns.
