Memphis adds JUCO linebacker

After competing as a linebacker for El Camino Community College over the past two seasons, Alphonso Brutus is sitting out the 2009 season focusing on his academics and preparing for the next level. Recently, Brutus made the decision as to where the setting would be for him to perform on the next level.

"I committed to Memphis University," Brutus said. "I feel Memphis has got a great program. They were talking to me from my first year in junior college at El Camino. I like the coaches and I just feel like it's the place I want to be."

Brutus, who played safety at Miami (Fla.) Killian on the high school level, will be heading to Memphis without ever seeing the campus, something he hopes to remedy in the coming months.

"I haven't had a chance to visits yet," he said. "We haven't really confirmed the dates yet but we talked about getting me out there for an official."

While also holding an offer from FIU, Brutus was getting recruited USF, Oregon State and Cal. For the Tigers, Brutus will be playing a hybrid linebacker/safety position, one that should fit Brutus well.

"They talked about how much that position means to the defense, how important it is to the defense they run," he said.

Brutus plans to graduate in December after which he will have two years to play two seasons at Memphis.
