2011 Belen Jesuit prospect gets first offer
Nick Menocal's first official offer did not have to travel far to end up at his high school. The 2011 prospect from Belen Jesuit offer made the short trip west a few blocks down Tamiami Trail back on September 2.
"FIU has already offered me a scholarship and I hear from them pretty much every day," said Nick Menocal.
The 6-foot-3, 235-pounder plays a variety of positions for the Wolverines, including linebacker, tight end, and most recently defensive end. The versatile Menocal talked about landing his first official offer.
"I was actually really excited. Just knowing my hard work is getting paid off. I thought it was a good stepping stone for my future."
The proximity of the FIU Stadium means Menocal should be a frequent visitor this fall.
"I was planning on seeing some FIU games this fall, because it's right near my house," said Menocal. "I'd like to see them play and watch their program because it's obviously getting better the past few years."
Menocal has played linebacker his entire football career, but when his coaches put him on the defensive line in an effort to boost the Wolverines' pass rush against Gulliver Prep's shotgun offense may have been a glimpse into the future. Menocal has a very large frame that looks like he can add several more pounds to his already 235-pound build.
"I actually didn't mind it at all, I liked rushing in and getting to the quarterback as my only responsibility," said Menocal on the transition to defensive end.
When it is time to choose a college, Menocal has two requirements he's looking to meet.
"I'm actually interested in studying law, so I want to look at a school with a good law school. I also want to go to a good athletic program, a good football program."
As Menocal moves on with his junior season, he talked about some of his personal goals for the remaining games.
"I would want to get a few more sacks. I haven't really had any this season so far, and make more tackles. Mainly the tackles, that's something I want to work on this season, be very strong tackling."
Menocal and his Belen Jesuit teammates face Hialeah Gardens Saturday night.
