Three-star QB has team off to fast start

In Phenix City, Ala., the Phenix City Central football program is off to a 4-0 start in large part behind the big arm and athleticism of its quarterback Darren Daniel. With some big games looming on the Phenix City Central schedule, there is still a lot of work to be done in the regular season.

"We're 4-0 right now," Daniel said of his team's start. I think I've completed more than 50 percent of my passes so I've been playing pretty good and the team's been playing pretty good."

Approaching on the undefeated Red Devils' schedule are several big games, including one with featuring some big-name prospects.

"We've got some close games coming up," he said. "Our next game we play Stanhope and they've got the [No. 14] player in the country playing for them (defensive back Demarcus Milliner). It's definitely added motivation. I try to motivate my team saying that just because he's ranked doesn't mean that he's better than us. We just have to play ball like we always play ball."

With tough games against Opelika and Auburn also on the horizon Daniel will be needing to put up some impressive performances to keep his team on the winning pace. With several college scholarship offers in hand, there are clearly some programs that believe in Daniel.

Most recently, Daniel picked up an offer from Troy but the Trojans have not quite cracked the top of his list. That group of schools consists of five programs, two of which have yet to offer.

"I kind of have my favorites," he said. "They're Stanford, Vanderbilt, Southern Miss, Georgia Tech and Alabama. I have offers from Southern Miss, Stanford and Vanderbilt. I'm mostly hearing from Georgia Tech and Alabama through the mail and I went up to Georgia retch this summer. I might go to Tuscaloosa this weekend when they play Arkansas."

While the Alabama trip would be an unofficial visit, Daniel has considered his official visit schedule, though he hasn't yet locked anything down.

"I've thought about [official visits]," he said. "I haven't had a chance to do it yet though. I know I'm going to try to take officials to Stanford and probably Vanderbilt. I'm going to take all five so I don't know where I'm going to go."

With no time frame in mind as far as a decision date, Daniel is keeping three factors in the forefront when making his decision.

"I would say education first and then my ability to play early and then probably the type of offense they run."
