Johnson's role still up in the air

Texas A&M senior quarterback Stephen McGee is out for the time being. A sprained shoulder with a slight separation will keep him out of practice through this weekend's off week with his status moving to day-to-day during the week of practice before facing Miami at Kyle Field on Saturday, Sept. 20. In the meantime, sophomore Jerrod Johnson will be preparing to run the team against the Hurricanes.

Johnson took over for McGee in the Aggies' 28-22 win at New Mexico Saturday, throwing for three touchdowns and 124 yards. But even with Johnson's solid performance, a healthy McGee would continue to take the reins.

"If (McGee) were able to play this week he'd be the starter this week. There would be no reason not to but we'll have to play that by ear," said A&M head coach Mike Sherman. "On the play he got hurt on he made a heck of a third down throw under duress and continued to play through the injury. He didn't do anything that would warrant him not being the starter this week."

For Johnson, however, it was just good to get back under center after playing receiver against Arkansas State and during the first drive in Albuquerque.
