Lawing Has The Midas Touch

It should be of no surprise to long-time Gamecock fans that assistant coach Brad Lawing was responsible for signing some of the top players in this year's recruiting class. The Hickory, N.C., native, in his second stint on the USC coaching staff, has always had the reputation as an outstanding and tireless recruiter. In today's report we will discuss the impact Lawing has made and is making on the USC football program.

If names such as Arturo Freeman, Melvin Paige, Lawrence Mitchell, Cecil Caldwell, John Abraham, Kenny Harney, Cedric Williams, Cleveland Pinkney and Anthony Wright are familiar to Gamecock fans, there is a good reason. These are just some of the players signed by Lawing in his first stint on the Gamecock coaching staff from 1989-1998.

This season, Lawing returned after serving as recruiting coordinator at the University of North Carolina for three years, where he consistently brought in talented recruiting classes. Carolina's defensive line coach told me in a pre-season interview one of his main goals was to change the DNA of the defensive line, and the coach made good on that goal, as he was personally responsible for bringing in three defensive linemen that all possess the size, speed, athleticism, and potential needed to compete in the SEC.
