Ends Selvie, Bellamy ready to face first test

  • GAME 1: USF Bulls vs. McNeese State Cowboys. When: Saturday, 7 p.m. Where: Raymond James Stadium, Tampa. On the Air: TV - WFTS ABC-28. Radio - 970 WFLA.

With proven veterans inhabiting USF's back seven on defense, the microscope will clearly be on the Bulls' front four early in the season. Most visible will be ends George Selvie and Treco Bellamy, first-year starters who will look to provide the same kind of quarterback pressure that seniors Terrence Royal and Jon Simmons did a year ago.

Selvie credits USF's linebacking corps of Ben Moffitt, Pat St. Louis and Stephen Nicholas with accelerating the learning curve for the young defensive line. "I've just been trying to learn everything, you know? I'm trying to learn the defense and the linebackers have really been helping me out on that," he said.

It's that kind of veteran leadership that Selvie feels will ultimately elevate the play of the defensive line.

"It's a big benefit. We've got experience behind us to tell us where we're going. They know the defense. They know all the calls. With (Nicholas, Moffitt and St. Louis) behind us, we feel real good," he said.

Selvie shrugs off suggestions that the Bulls defense will be expected to carry the offense initially. "Both of us got to do our job on offense and defense. If we do our job on defense, the offense will get going too, so that's how we think of it."
