Notes: Originally signed with Iowa State out of high school but failed to qualify and spent two years at Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College. Made an immediate impact with the Crimson Tide, as he stepped in to start all 27 games at left tackle in 2009-10.
Positives: Very long-limbed and light on his feet. Quick to get into blocks and to set in pass protection. Maintains good positioning and can seal defenders. Good body control and balance - is seldom on the ground. Can pull and work up a level to seal off linebackers. Showed more physicality and a better punch at the Senior Bowl and proved he could handle playing on the inside. Worked out well in positional drills at the Combine. Good work ethic. Regularly faced top competition. Extremely durable four-year starter who has not missed a game.
Negatives: Not strong-handed or physical and uses a lot of finesse. Tends to play upright. Does not play with power in his lower body or create much push. Does not consistently finish blocks. At times looks confused by pressure and is late to adjust to the blitz.
Summary: A fairly athletic, positional wall-off blocker who has shown well in the postseason and improved his draft standing by showing that he could handle playing left guard or tackle. Has starter potential and versatility is a plus.
