The second week of action in Ohio high school football was filled with a bit of everything. Blowouts, exciting finishes, and clutch performances were the story of the evening on Friday night. We recap some of the top games.
VALLEY VIEW 42, INDIAN HILL 41 One year after a heartbreaking loss at Valley View, the Indian Hill Braves lose another to the Spartans, this time in stunning fashion. In perhaps the game of the young year, Valley View knocked off Indian Hill 42-41 in the final seconds Friday night, running their record to 2-0, while the Braves fall to 1-1.
It will be a game Indian Hill hopes is a distant memory by the next time they take the field. If they are indeed going to accomplish their No. 1 goal of winning a State Championship, the Braves are going to need to forget about this one right away.
After falling behind 35-28 with 7:35 left in the game, Indian Hill responded with two Jacob Bauer touchdown runs (16 and 8 yards) to take a 41-35 lead with just 47 seconds remaining. However, Logan Kornman's extra point attempt was blocked, leaving the Braves with an ominous six point lead. With just 47 ticks on the clock, Indian Hill seemed safe.
Not so fast, as the Spartans drove the length of the field and with just seven seconds remaining, Valley View's John Day lofted a perfect pass in the front corner of the end zone to junior receiver Justin Griffiths for a 22-yard touchdown, and the game was suddenly tied. All that remained was the usually automatic extra point attempt. This time, Valley View knocked it through and they had a miraculous come-from-behind 42-41 win.
This was a game that Indian Hill seemed to have in hand early in the second half. After leading 21-14 at the break, the Braves scored on their first possession of the half, taking a 14-point lead with 6:07 remaining in the third quarter. But, shortly after, Valley View's defense stiffened and didn't allow a point until the 4:04 mark of the fourth quarter. In the meantime, the Spartans were able to move the ball and managed to tie the game and ultimately take the lead.
Perhaps the most impressive thing about the game was Valley View's ability to slow down Indian Hill's standout quarterback Bo Cordell, who ultimately threw for 333 yards, but only threw one touchdown and was picked off twice. After 510 yards in the opener, 333 yards from Cordell is a good defensive effort.
The quarterback who won the game - our Gold Star Chili Star of the Week nominee ? was Valley View's John Day. The 5-foot-11, 168-pound Day went 15-for-25 for 284 yards and touchdowns of 14, 71, five, and the game-winning 22-yarder. Day also led the Spartans with 65 yards on 14 carries and another 42-yard touchdown run.
Indian Hill got another good game from junior running back Jacob Bauer in the losing effort. Bauer ran for 168 yards on 25 carries and touchdown runs of four, one, 16, and eight yards.
The Braves still have plenty of football to play. And perhaps the best news for them is they only have to wait until next Thursday to get back out on the field and try again. They play another Spartan team, this time the Turpin Spartans.
HARRISON 28, EAST CENTRAL (IN) 21 The Battle of I-74 lived up to all it was cracked up to be and more. In front of 8,000 fans, the game began with an 85-yard kickoff return by Harrison's Brandon Fisher for a touchdown. It was all the scoring the Wildcats could muster in the first half. Harrison only had two first downs in the stanza.
East Central worked a methodical drive, giving them a 21-7 lead with 5:42 left in the third quarter. Jake Meiner connected beautifully to Zach Bley on a 31-yard scoring toss to give them the two-touchdown lead.
At that point, it became the Randy Doss show. The senior QB willed his Wildcats to victory. Doss completed only 11 of his 21 passes for 130 yards, but added 80 yards on the ground and made plays when they needed to be made.
The night would culminate on a Doss to classmate Josh Dugan 13-yard scoring strike with just 13 seconds left in the game. With the Doss XP it would put an exclamation point on 21 unanswered points by Harrison in the last 15 minutes of play for the victory.
PRINCETON 49, CENTERVILLE 30 Centerville ran for seven touchdowns on their way to a huge Harbin Ratings win. Logan Haines scored on runs of 29, 40 and 5 yards for the Elks. Quarterback Adam Replogle also scored twice on the ground.
Princeton was led by Spencer Ware, he tossed two scores and ran for another. The Vikings defense has given up 76 points in their first two contests.
The road doesn't get any easier for either team as Centerville travels to Nippert Stadium to take on Moeller. Princeton will host Glen Este at Viking Stadium in Week 3.
ANDERSON 42, MASON 13 It was a humid night at Anderson's Brown Stadium, but that didn't stop the Redskins from getting the win.
In front of their home crowd, Anderson (2-0) controlled the game all night, holding the Mason Comets (0-2) to only 13 points, and only five in the first three quarters. Anderson would go on to win the game 42 to 13.
Transfer running back Kyle Slater is making quite a name for himself through two games for the Redskins. The junior finished with 143 yards and two touchdowns and even had an 85-yard run called back due to a penalty.
Three first half turnovers doomed the Comets and they had little answer for the Redskins' combination of power and speed.
It's an impressive start for the defending Ohio Division II champions and the team currently ranked No. 1 in the QueenCityHigh.com Ohio Division II-Division III rankings. Anderson has outscored its opponents 98-19.
