Athens, GA ? The North Georgia Jaycees will host the first annual Jaycees Celebrity Softball Game and Homerun Derby on Sunday, June 28, 2009 at 4pm at the Clarke Central High School baseball field.

The family-friendly event is a fundraiser benefiting the East Georgia Chapter of the American Red Cross. The Red Cross Bloodmobile will be on-site for anyone interested in donating blood during the event.

"We're really excited about the opportunity to bring local celebrities and the Red Cross together with the Jaycees to have a great time for a great cause," said North Georgia Jaycees member and Event Chairman Shadi Issa.

The Celebrity Softball Game and Home Run Derby was originally scheduled for May 17 but was canceled due to torrential downpours in the Athens area. The rescheduled event will take place rain or shine as the inclement weather plan calls for the event to move inside of the Clarke Central High School gymnasium.

Tickets purchased for the original event date will be honored for admittance into the June 28 game.

The game and Home Run Derby will feature local celebrities like Sheriff Ira Edwards; former Navy Supply Corps School Commander Len Sapera; University of Georgia Strength and Conditioning coach Josh Brooks; former UGA football standouts Damien Gary and Kelin Johnson; local radio hosts Chris Brame, Kris Harris and many others.

Starting quarterback for the 2009 Georgia Bulldogs, Joe Cox, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Former Bulldog great and college football Hall of Famer Charley Trippi will also be on hand signing autographs along with the other celebrities.

"The Red Cross appreciates the North Georgia Jaycees holding a Celebrity Softball Game to benefit Red Cross services. We are glad to have the Jaycees as partners in the community," said Jennifer Pennington, executive director, East Georgia Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Raffle drawings will be held throughout the afternoon. Some of the feature items include a Larry Munson autographed football, a one-night stay at the Hilton Garden Inn in downtown Athens, and much more.

Tickets for this great community event are only $5 and can be purchased on-site the day of, or in advance by calling Mike Pilcher at 706-614-0843. Concessions will be sold all day for $1. Commemorative t-shirts will also be sold during the event.
