Week 10 is highlighted by the epic SEC West showdown in Tuscaloosa, this season's "Game of the Century."
There are some other key games as well, most notably Oklahoma State -- which is third in the BCS standings -- welcoming in once-beaten Kansas State. And Stanford (at Oregon State) and Oregon (at Washington) both go on the road before their showdown next week in Palo Alto.
Here's a look at each game involving a FBS team this weekend.
Akron (1-7) at Miami of Ohio (3-5), 7:30 p.m., ESPNU THE BUZZ: These teams average a combined 150.9 rushing yards per game. Combined. In short, this is not going to be a thing of beauty.
THE LINE: Miami by 14 THE PICK: Miami 33-17
Florida State (5-3) at Boston College (2-6), 8 p.m., ESPN THE BUZZ: There have been only eight games in ACC history decided by 24-19 scores, but two of those have come in the past five meetings between these teams. BC has to win out to become bowl eligible; what's likely is that after this one, BC won't have to worry about bowl eligibility this season.
THE LINE: FSYU by 14.5 THE PICK: FSU 31-10
Tulsa (5-3) at UCF (4-4), 8 p.m., CBS Sports Network THE BUZZ: Tulsa is one of two teams unbeaten in league play in Conference USA, while UCF has been perhaps the league's biggest disappointment. UCF has thrown just four TD passes this season.
THE LINE: UCF by 1.5 THE PICK: Tulsa 27-21
Central Michigan (3-6) at Kent State (2-6), 8 p.m., ESPN2 THE BUZZ: If you're so desperate for a football fix that you'd consider watching this, take a step back and think about that for a minute. Heck, find a high school game to attend.
THE LINE: Kent State by 1 THE PICK: Kent State 23-20
USC (6-2) at Colorado (1-8), 9 p.m., ESPN THE BUZZ: USC likely is still suffering a hangover of sorts from last week's triple-overtime loss to Stanford. Thing is, given the rancid nature of this week's opponent, USC likely can sleepwalk through this one and still win. Colorado has surrendered 500 yards of total offense in each of its past four games.
THE LINE: USC by 21.5 THE PICK: USC 44-17
Michigan (7-1) at Iowa (5-3), noon, ESPN THE BUZZ: Michigan remains in the hunt for a Big Ten Legends Division title; Iowa, which inexplicably lost to Minnesota last week, is worried about bowl positioning. The Wolverines lead the series 40-12-4. Iowa has won the past two but never has won three in a row over the Wolverines.
THE LINE: Michigan by 4 THE PICK: Michigan 30-27
Texas Tech (5-3) at Texas (5-2), noon, FX THE BUZZ: Texas Tech followed up a huge upset at Oklahoma by laying an egg at home against Iowa State (Iowa State?!?!). The Red Raiders have lost on each of their past six trips to Austin and are 5-28 all-time there.
THE LINE: Texas by 12 THE PICK: Texas 38-34
Louisville (4-4) at West Virginia (5-2), noon, Big East syndication/Sportsnet New York/MASN/ESPN GamePlan THE BUZZ: Louisville has won back-to-back Big East games for the first time since 2006. WVU has won four in a row in the series and is 7-1 against the Cardinals in Morgantown.
THE LINE: WVU by 13.5 THE PICK: WVU 28-16
Syracuse (5-3) at Connecticut (3-5), noon, ESPNU THE BUZZ: Just call this the "Paul Pasqualoni Bowl," as the UConn coach goes against his former employer for the first time. UConn has won four in a row over the Orange.
THE LINE: UConn by 2 THE PICK: Syracuse 20-14
Minnesota (2-6) at Michigan State (6-2), noon, Big Ten Network THE BUZZ: Michigan State suffered a tough loss at Nebraska last week. But there's no better tonic for a bad week than a visit from Minnesota.
THE LINE: Michigan State by 27.5 THE PICK: Michigan State 43-14
Indiana (1-8) at Ohio State (5-3), noon, Big Ten Network THE BUZZ: Ohio State probably still is partying after last week's unbelievable win over Wisconsin. And there's no better tonic for a possible winning hangover than a visit from the Hoosiers, who have beaten the Buckeyes just 12 times in 83 meetings.
THE LINE: Ohio State by 27.5 THE PICK: Ohio State 41-7
Ball State (5-4) at Eastern Michigan (5-3), noon, ESPN GamePlan THE BUZZ: Eastern Michigan, which has been one of the nation's most rancid programs for the past decade, still has a shot at the MAC West title. And both of these teams are in good shape in terms of becoming bowl eligible. EMU won last season, snapping an 18-game losing streak in the process.
THE LINE: EMU by 2.5 THE PICK: EMU 27-20
Vanderbilt (4-4) at Florida (4-4), 12:20 p.m., SEC syndication/MSG network/Comcast Sportsnet California/ESPN GamePlan THE BUZZ: This is homecoming for Florida, which has beaten Vanderbilt every season since 1988. Vandy is 1-18-1 all-time in Gainesville, with the only win coming in 1945.
THE LINE: Florida by 13.5 THE PICK: Florida 23-17
Virginia (5-3) at Maryland (2-6), 12:30 p.m., ACC syndication/ESPN GamePlan THE BUZZ: UVa has been a pleasant surprise this season and the Cavs can clinch a bowl bid with a win in this one. The Cavs have won 14 of the past 19 against the Terps.
THE LINE: Virginia by 1.5 THE PICK: Virginia 33-24
North Carolina (6-3) at N.C. State (4-4), 12:30 p.m., ACC syndication THE BUZZ: N.C. State coach Tom O'Brien has struggled during his tenure with the Wolfpack, but he is 4-0 against the Heels at NCSU and another victory over UNC would get some of the ? uh ? wolves off his back.
THE LINE: UNC by 3.5 THE PICK: UNC 37-31
New Mexico State (3-5) at Georgia (6-2), 12:30 p.m., Comcast-Charter Sports Southeast/ESPN GamePlan THE BUZZ: Because of an injury and three suspensions, Georgia will be without each of its four scholarship tailbacks. But will it matter? New Mexico State never has beaten an SEC team (0-13).
THE LINE: Georgia by 34 THE PICK: Georgia 41-10
Kansas (2-6) at Iowa State (4-4), 12:30 p.m., Fox College Sports THE BUZZ: Iowa State is coming off a shocking beatdown of Texas Tech and now has a pulse when it comes to gaining bowl eligibility. It's vital that they win this, though.
THE LINE: Iowa State by 14 THE PICK: Iowa State 38-28
TCU (6-2) at Wyoming (5-2), 2 p.m., The mtn. THE BUZZ: This hasn't been much of a game in the past three meetings, as TCU has outscored the Cowboys 144-17 in that stretch. TCU has allowed just four rushing TDs.
THE LINE: TCU by 19 THE PICK: TCU 38-17
Duke (3-5) at Miami (4-4), 3 p.m., Sun Sports/Fox Sports South/Fox Sports West/NESN/Comcast Sportsnet Mid-Atlantic/ESPN GamePlan THE BUZZ: Miami is 6-0 against Duke as an ACC member. Duke already won once in Miami this season, beating FIU on Oct. 1.
THE LINE: Miami by 15.5 THE PICK: Miami 38-20
Tulane (2-7) at SMU (5-3), 3 p.m. THE BUZZ: SMU looks to be out of the running for the C-USA West title, and the Mustangs still need one more win for bowl eligibility. They should get that win against a bad Tulane team.
THE LINE: SMU by 25.5 THE PICK: SMU 41-14
Stanford (8-0) at Oregon State (2-6), 3:30 p.m., ABC regional/ESPN GamePlan THE BUZZ: Stanford has a nation's-best 16-game winning streak and is 28-5 with Andrew Luck at quarterback. Stanford played at USC last week and gets Oregon next week, so is this a trap game?
THE LINE: Stanford by 21 THE PICK: Stanford 45-27
Texas A&M (5-3) at Oklahoma (7-1), 3:30 p.m., ABC regional/ESPN2/ESPN GamePlan THE BUZZ: Before the season, this looked as if it would be one of the key games in the Big 12. Now, because of A&M's ineptitude in the second half of some key games, it has become a case of whether OU can avoid the upset bug. A loss would drop A&M coach Mike Sherman under .500 in his Aggies tenure.
THE LINE: Oklahoma by 13.5 THE PICK: Oklahoma 45-35
Purdue (4-4) at Wisconsin (6-2), 3:30 p.m., ABC regional/ESPN2 THE BUZZ: Unless Wisconsin allows Purdue to throw into the end zone in the waning moments of a close game, the Badgers should be fine. And despite back-to-back losses, Wisconsin still has a legit shot at winning the Big Ten's Leaders Division -- as well as the overall league title.
THE LINE: Wisconsin by 25 THE PICK: Wisconsin 56-23
Northwestern (3-5) at Nebraska (7-1), 3:30 p.m., Big Ten Network THE BUZZ: Last week's victory over Michigan State puts the Huskers in the driver's seat in the Big Ten's Legends Division race. It seems unlikely that defense-challenged Northwestern can knock the Huskers from their perch.
THE LINE: Nebraska by 17.5 THE PICK: Nebraska 42-27
UTEP (4-4) at Rice (2-6), 3:30 p.m., Fox Sports Net THE BUZZ: The best news for Rice is that Case Keenum isn't the opposing quarterback this week. UTEP still has a shot at bowl eligibility, and this is a game that the Miners can't let slip away.
THE LINE: Rice by 1 THE PICK: UTEP 43-38
Army (3-4) at Air Force (3-5), 3:30 p.m., CBS THE BUZZ: A victory over Army would give Air Force its second consecutive Commander-in-Chief Trophy. Air Force has won five in a row and 13 of the past 14 against the Black Knights.
THE LINE: Air Force by 15.5 THE PICK: Air Force 40-21
Ole Miss (2-6) at Kentucky (3-5), 3:30 p.m., ESPNU THE BUZZ: The hounds make their way to Lexington, as this is the dog of the week. The loser of this one likely finishes winless in the SEC. Truth be told, the hounds may want to detour to Louisville, as the Breeders Cup is being held this weekend at Churchill Downs.
THE LINE: Ole Miss by 1 THE PICK: Ole Miss 30-24
Troy (2-5) at Navy (2-6), 3:30 p.m., CBS Sports Network THE BUZZ: Navy has dropped six in a row, mainly because of a rancid defense. This is the Midshipmen's final home game of the season. This is the second Sun Belt opponent of the season for Navy, which beat Western Kentucky in September for its only win over an FBS foe.
THE LINE: Navy by 6.5 THE PICK: Navy 38-34
Louisiana-Monroe (2-6) at Louisiana-Lafayette (7-2), 3:30 p.m., Sun Belt syndication/ESPN GamePlan THE BUZZ: This is the final home game of the season for ULL, which still has a great shot at the Sun Belt title. ULL has won three in a row in the series, and surely Ragin' Cajuns fan will celebrate with a few Abitas and some boudin if the winning streak moves to four.
THE LINE: ULL by 4.5 THE PICK: ULL 34-21
Southern Miss (7-1) at East Carolina (4-4), 4 p.m., Comcast-Charter Sports Southeast THE BUZZ: The winner becomes the sole occupant of first place in the East Division of Conference USA, and Southern Miss basically can lock up the title with a win. ECU has won two in a row in the series.
THE LINE: Southern Miss by 8.5 THE PICK: Southern Miss 34-24
Idaho (1-7) at San Jose State (3-5), 4 p.m., WAC syndication/Comcast Sportsnet California/Altitude2/ESPN GamePlan THE BUZZ: Idaho has lost six in a row, tied for the third-longest losing streak in the nation. San Jose State has committed the most turnovers (26) in the nation.
THE LINE: San Jose State by 9 THE PICK: San Jose State 28-16
Florida International (5-3) at Western Kentucky (4-4), 4 p.m. THE BUZZ: Western has won four in a row and put itself in a position to challenge for the Sun Belt title -- and earn its first bowl bid. FIU appears out of the running for the league title, but the Golden Panthers still have a shot at earning a bowl bid.
THE LINE: FIU by 3 THE PICK: FIU 33-31
Arkansas State (6-2) at Florida Atlantic (0-7), 4 p.m. THE BUZZ: Arkansas State is the only team unbeaten in Sun Belt Conference play, while FAU is one of just two winless teams in the nation (New Mexico is the other). This is FAU's first homecoming in its new stadium.
THE LINE: Arkansas State by 17 THE PICK: Arkansas State 38-17
Washington State (3-5) at California (4-4), 6:30 p.m., Comcast Sports Net California/ROOT Sports Northwest THE BUZZ: Cal needs to worry about becoming bowl eligible. The Golden Bears have won six in a row in this series.
THE LINE: Cal by 9.5 THE PICK: Cal 34-27
Missouri (4-4) at Baylor (4-3), 7 p.m., Fox Sports Net THE BUZZ: Baylor comes in having lost three of its past four, and its defense has surrendered 114 points in the past two games. This is big for both in terms of becoming bowl eligible.
THE LINE: Baylor by 2.5 THE PICK: Baylor 41-35
Cincinnati (6-1) at Pittsburgh (4-4), 7 p.m., ESPNU THE BUZZ: Cincy is the only team unbeaten in Big East play. This is the first game for Pitt without star TB Ray Graham, who is out for the season with a knee injury. Cincy is in the midst of a stretch in which the Bearcats play on the road four times in five games.
THE LINE: Cincinnati by 2.5 THE PICK: Cincinnati 31-21
Utah (4-4) at Arizona (2-6), 7 p.m., Fox Sports Arizona/Fox College Sports Central THE BUZZ: Arizona is extremely unlikely to go bowling this season, but the Wildcats can put a dent in Utah's bowl hopes with a victory. Arizona throws the ball well and Utah has struggled against the pass. Utah runs the ball well and Arizona has struggled against the run.
THE LINE: Arizona by 3.5 THE PICK: Utah 37-31
Houston (8-0) at UAB (1-7), 7 p.m., CBS Sports Network THE BUZZ: Houston QB Case Keenum threw nine TD passes in last week's mauling of Rice. What does he do for an encore? (In case you're wondering, UAB is 108th nationally in pass defense and has allowed 18 TD passes.)
THE LINE: Houston by 28 THE PICK: Houston 56-24
Middle Tennessee (2-5) at Tennessee (3-5), 7 p.m., Sun Sports/Fox Sports South/Fox Sports Southwest/ESPN GamePlan THE BUZZ: This is just the second meeting between the schools; the Vols won 26-3 in 2002. This one is vital for the Vols if they want to go to a bowl this season.
THE LINE: Tennessee by 20.5 THE PICK: Tennessee 30-14
USF (4-3) at Rutgers (5-3), 7 p.m. THE BUZZ: USF has lost three in a row, and the Bulls need to start worrying about becoming bowl eligible. USF has scored first in all seven of its games this season.
THE LINE: USF by 2 THE PICK: USF 24-20
South Carolina (7-1) at Arkansas (7-1), 7:15 p.m., ESPN THE BUZZ: Arkansas has stumbled but managed not to fall in the past two weeks, barely squeezing past Ole Miss and Vandy. If the Hogs stumble and bumble again, can South Carolina take advantage? The Gamecocks' defense has been stout, but can South Carolina win in Fayetteville without Marcus Lattimore? A loss puts a big-time dent in the Gamecocks' SEC East hopes.
THE LINE: Arkansas by 5.5 THE PICK: Arkansas 21-13
Arizona State (6-2) at UCLA (4-4), 7:30 p.m., Versus THE BUZZ: Arizona State can basically sew up the Pac-12 South title with a win over the Bruins, who need a win in their quest to become bowl eligible. Arizona State has lost on four of its past five trips to UCLA.
THE LINE: Arizona State by 9 THE PICK: Arizona State 35-24
UT-Martin (5-3) at Mississippi State (4-4), 7:30 p.m., Comcast-Charter Sports Southeast/ESPN GamePlan THE BUZZ: This is one of five games that SEC teams are playing against FCS opponents in November. It's good timing for Mississippi State, which needs an easy win in its quest to become bowl eligible.
THE LINE: None THE PICK: Mississippi State 44-10
LSU (8-0) at Alabama (8-0), 8 p.m., CBS THE BUZZ: OK, we're pretty sure everyone knows this is huge. Interestingly, LSU is just the second top-ranked team to visit Tuscaloosa; the first was Oklahoma in 2003. Then again, Alabama used to play a lot of its "big" games in Birmingham.
THE LINE: Alabama by 5 THE PICK: Alabama 20-17
Kansas State (7-1) at Oklahoma State (8-0), 8 p.m., ABC regional/ESPN2 THE BUZZ: K-State got blasted at home last week by Oklahoma and now has to travel to play equally explosive Oklahoma State. The Cowboys know that if they win out, they will be playing for the national title, so don't expect them to take K-State lightly.
THE LINE: Oklahoma State by 21 THE PICK: Oklahoma State 48-24
Notre Dame (5-3) at Wake Forest (5-3), 8 p.m., ABC regional/ESPN2 THE BUZZ: This is the first meeting between the schools and it matches two of the five private schools that have been to a BCS game in the past six seasons; Stanford, USC and TCU are the others. This is the first of three consecutive games against ACC foes for the Irish, who next play Maryland and Boston College.
THE LINE: Notre Dame by 13.5 THE PICK: Notre Dame 38-17
New Mexico (0-8) at San Diego State (4-3), 8 p.m., The mtn. THE BUZZ: New Mexico has allowed at least 42 points in each of its past seven games and has been shut out in each of its past two. San Diego State coach Rocky Long is the former coach at New Mexico, and his departure from New Mexico after the 2008 season wasn't a pleasant one.
THE LINE: San Diego State by 35.5 THE PICK: San Diego State 49-3
Oregon (7-1) at Washington (6-2), 10:30 p.m., Fox Sports Net THE BUZZ: Washington's offense can put up some points, but Washington's defense has been sieve-like, which is not a good trait when Oregon is next on the schedule. The Ducks have Stanford next week. This is the final game at Husky Stadium before the facility, which opened in 1919, undergoes major renovation; Washington will play its 2012 home games at Century Link Field, which is home of the Seattle Seahawks.
THE LINE: Oregon by 16.5 THE PICK: Oregon 53-31
Boise State (7-0) at UNLV (2-5), 10:30 p.m., CBS Sports Network THE BUZZ: Boise State's Kellen Moore should become the winningest quarterback in FBS history in this one. He is 45-2 as a starter and needs one more win to surpass Texas' Colt McCoy as the record-holder.
THE LINE: Boise State by 41 THE PICK: Boise State 55-10
Louisiana Tech (4-4) at Fresno State (3-5), 10:30 p.m., ESPNU THE BUZZ: A big game for both teams in terms of becoming bowl eligible. Louisiana Tech has won three in a row overall and has won four consecutive WAC road games. Fresno State TB Robbie Rouse ran for 286 yards against Louisiana Tech last season.
THE LINE: Fresno State by 3 THE PICK: Fresno State 28-23
Utah State (2-5) at Hawaii (5-3), 11:59 p.m., ESPN GamePlan THE BUZZ: Hawaii has won seven consecutive WAC home games, and Utah State has lost four league games in a row and four in a row overall on the road. Utah State has thrown just one interception this season; unfortunately for the Aggies, they also have intercepted just one pass.
THE LINE: Hawaii by 3.5 THE PICK: Hawaii 43-34
Northern Illinois (6-3) at Bowling Green (4-5), 8 p.m., ESPN2 THE BUZZ: NIU is in the driver's seat in the MAC West race after edging Toledo in a wild shootout. Bowling Green is hoping against hope that it can become bowl eligible.
THE LINE: NIU by 5.5 THE PICK: NIU 47-27
Western Michigan (5-4) at Toledo (5-4), 8 p.m., ESPNU THE BUZZ: This will be the second consecutive Tuesday night home game for Toledo, which scored 60 and lost to Northern Illinois this past Tuesday. Both have a good shot at becoming bowl eligible; indeed, the winner of this one locks up eligibility.
THE LINE: Toledo by 12 THE PICK: Toledo 44-31
39-14 straight up, 25-27 against the spread
YEAR TO DATE
399-130 straight up, 204-230-2 against the spread (no spread on games involving FCS schools)
