In praise of Todd Howard
One of the nation's most underrated coaches and least known is Bruin defensive line coach Todd Howard. He took over a group that was battered and bullied every week. His group of defensive linemen had more holes in it than Swiss Cheese. Who doesn't remember when UCLA to be one of the worst run defenses in the Pac 10?
In one short year not only was his line stellar in helping against the run, but for the last two seasons, the Bruins have had the Pac 10's leader in sacks with the turnaround performances of Justin Hickman and Bruce Davis.
Recently BruinBlitz.com had a few moments with Howard.
BruinBlitz.com: You have to replace NFL bound Bruce Davis
Howard: "We have Korey Bosworth who got some playing experience last year and both the tight side and the open side end. Korey is an athletic guy, he's going to be about 10 pounds heavier than Bruce and he's just as good an athlete. I think he will be able to play strong against the run, because he's stronger , he's not as wiry strong as Bruce Davis, but I expect him to be very productive."
BruinBlitz.com: How about Tom Blake?
Howard: "Tom started most of the season last year so he has a year under his belt after transferring from UC-Davis. I think he brings all the tools. He's strong, he's fast , athletic and I expect him to have a productive season as well."
