Auburn runs away with 49-24 win
AUBURN, Ala., - Both Auburn and Mississippi State wanted to put last season's 3-2 defensive showing behind them.
The two schools combined for 73 points and 886 yards of offense on Saturday but much of those lofty stats belonged to the Tigers. Auburn racked up 589 yards on offense rolling to a 49-24 victory in front of 85,269 faithful at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
"It was a disappointing night for us," said MSU head coach Dan Mullen. "I know our guys gave a lot of hard work. We have to do a much better job as a coaching staff. I am disappointed in the coaching staff, especially myself tonight, not putting our players in better positions to be successful.
Auburn accumulated an astounding 390 yards on the ground and had two back eclipse the 100-yard plateau. Ben Tate ran 20 times for 157 yards and one touchdown while Onterio McCalebb toted 16 times for 114 yards and also had a score.
"Obviously it was completely unacceptable for us to give up over 300 rushing yards," Mullen said. "That is not Mississippi State defense."
The Tigers improved to 2-0 on the year with the win and earned the first SEC victory for head coach Gene Chizik
