Two-a-Day Insider: Frosh making plays
Auburn freshman cornerback Neiko Thorpe's rise up the depth chart continues. Tuesday, Thorpe worked with the first-team defense during 11-on-11 drills, when the defense went to the nickel package.
Thorpe joined juniors Jerraud Powers and Walter McFadden at cornerback, playing corner while Powers moved to nickelback. It's the latest sign that Thorpe, Auburn's most impressive defensive freshman during two-a-days, stands to play a major role this season.
Defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads has been impressed by Thorpe's play every day at practice. According to Rhoads' Thorpe's athletic ability and instincts make up for his inexperience in the defense.
Thorpe knows he can't rely on his instincts forever, though. He's working hard on learning Auburn's defensive schemes
"He wants me to get ready, so whatever I do wrong he's going to correct me, just like the older guys," said Thorpe. "That's what I want. I don't want to be out here doing the wrong thing."
Thorpe showed Rhoads an example of just that in a coverage drill earlier this week.
