Tale of two quarterbacks
Exactly twelve months ago, Matt Flynn staked his claim to the starting quarterback job at LSU.
JaMarcus Russell, who had guided the Tigers to the Southeastern Conference championship game, did not make the trip with the team to the Peach Bowl in Atlanta due to shoulder and wrist injuries.
So, Flynn was handed the reins of the LSU offense against Miami. All Flynn did was account for 235 yards and earn Offensive Most Valuable Player honors in the Tigers' 40-3 crushing of the Hurricanes.
Flynn then progressed during spring drills where he ran the No. 1 offense while Russell continued his rehabilitation. It appeared there would be major competition for the quarterback position in pre-season drills.
