Brown makes strong spring impression
Perhaps no player on the Mississippi State roster shined more this spring than redshirt freshman linebacker Beniquez Brown.
During the Bulldogs three major spring scrimmages, Brown recorded 20 tackles, three tackles for loss, two pass deflections and two interceptions - one of which he returned for a 28-yard touchdown.
Brown clearly established himself as an impact player in Geoff Collins linebacker corps and proved he will contribute this fall with his playmaking ability.
"We've got some good linebackers and coach teaches us to use our speed, our hands and our power to get around," Brown said. "He puts us in good opportunities to make plays."
Although Collins has controlled the linebackers for the past two years, Brown feels that he and the rest of the defense will benefit from Collins' aggressive and attacking style of play calling now that he is the full-time coordinator.
"Under Coach Collins the defense is totally different," Brown said. "It's the same model but we are coming after people. We're not just sitting back on our heels waiting on the offense to get up on us. We're attacking now."
The 6-foot-1 Brown put on 15-pounds during his redshirt season and now tips the scales at 225-pounds. He also fine tuned his skill set and football knowledge working under Collins' tutelage last fall.
